The Tata Nano is moving and how! Embattled it might be but the world's smallest four-seater mini with the power to ring in major social change via affordable mobility is on the move and ready for a March 23 unveiling. Adil Jal Darukhanawala reports after seeing pre-production cars infesting the Indian roadscape. 

First and foremost this isn't about a drive or a ride story. It is also not about a technical description of what is in essence a great simplistic design geared to delivering what is still held so precious by people all over the world - the freedom of individual mobility. And finally this freedom could be on hand for millions of impoverished folk thanks to a price point firmly within their ambit. The images you see here were of near production ready cars, devoid of any body camouflage, running with other traffic quite effortlessly and easily on the Pune - Bangalore national highway.Seeing these small cars move with such agility and poise and clearly performing with aplomb on the main fast paced highway which scythes through north-western Pune vindicated to us as to why the Nano is so mega. Not just in our minds but out on the roads as well.

Let's bust that myth here because after the brave move of going to Singur backfired - for Mamata, the delay only made Tata Motors more determined to get things right. Of course Gujarat beckons but the plant near Ahmedabad is yet 8 to 10 months away at best so not wanting to place its small eggs in one basket, Tata Motors will have its Nano effectively rolling out from Pantnagar and Pune. Any vehicle made at Pantnagar does enjoy a tax holiday so this is in Tata Motors' favour as well as those of its intended customers. While volumes would be slow to begin with, the fact that the Nano would get rolling would definitely start an all new era in the automobile world.

    i am an engineer and and of course i know value of money.a car giving u so much in less price and and u criticise it for safety reasons then i'll ask that if u can't drive safely then what wrong with car.if u compare it with limousine then who is junk here.which bike is best selling in india [splendour]and it is cheap also,so is it a junk? | Reply

    Nano is going to be exported too but that model is differnt... the body is going to be differnt as per international safety standards. Don't think from heart you are not going to get anything good in a price of a bilke. Nano will only increase junk becasue it will not have a resale value and most of the people who would be buying nano is going to be people who are shifting bike to car,....believe me they will take loan for it too. Think b4 going 4 one.. Is is really safe.. ( safety comes first) Do you think Nano is going to have a resale value... | Reply

    For all those people who think this is a safe car, keep on dreaming. i even realised one nut saying that this is safer than all jap cars, to him i would say dont talk about something you cant afford and havent driven. i own a civic and i know that it has a 5 star crash rating which is among the best in the auto industry. I agree the 800 is crappier than the nano but at the same time the nano is new and the 800 is an ancient model. the nano is only a good car only for those who cant afford to pay a lot but need a car. id love to see the nano climb a ghat nonstop with all 4 passengers. | Reply

    Dear Mr. Tata,It is indeed an achievement for India to produce such a marvellous machine.It is upto the politicians and bureaucrats now to provide an efficient banking systems[for loans for middle class to buy Nana ]and a good road network[to help decongest the roads] If these 2 factors are taken care of, I would lead to sustained stimulus for banking,infrastructure,automotive,plastics ,petroleum and other industries further pushing up the GDP.It would be good if our PM, who is has been FM and economist in the past formulates any strategy to keep the ball rolling. | Reply

    The review of road tests are positive. That tells about the quality. Its cheap in price, but not in quality. It has better safety features than the best selling 'Japanese' cars. You can sit in those cramped 'quality' Japanese cars and watch nano zip on roads. | Reply

    Nano 624 cc engine generates max power: 35 bhp@5500 rpm, torque: 4.8 kgm@3000 rpm, fuel consumption: 23.6 kmpl. Many 200 cc mobike engines generates close to 20 bhp. That means a sub 500 cc hi-tech twin engine can generate close to 40 bhp (more than Maruti 800) and give a mileage to Nano over 30 kmpl. For over a decade, Suzuki is using a 660 cc engine in Japanese Suzuki cars, which generates about 64 bhp and they will bring that in India soon in a new model, costing little more than Nano. | Reply

    @ Manoharan venkidusamy mr. all i have to say is u r a naive in auto since u cant figure out the difference between a bare basic car and a luxury car i wud like to ask u a few questions firstly have u ever owned a maruti 800 in ur entire life span and does any car maker in the world sell cars below 2lacs with atleast a single airbag and abs brakes and finally is tata uncle to every one in india tat he will make losses on his part to give a car which has airbags n abs brakes for a 1lac price tag....stop talking nonsense mr. u wud be kidding mr.tata is here for business n not charity but thru products for masses he is making car a possible dream for millions of indians and ppl world over so beware before u speak against nano or tat its a marvel in terms of engineering and an indian ingenuity...kudos to the tata nano team!!! | Reply

    Nano will come as Basic and Luxury. Luxury will have body color bumper, stylized steel wheels (looks good, with option of Alloy), fog lamps, central locking, Power windows, A/C with heater, Dual color interior, Fabric trimmed seats (base has vinyls), 3-spoke steering wheel, more body colors etc. This is a very nice packet but price is not declared. Safety features are much better and improved than maruti 800. I think it should be less than Rs 2 lakh, hence, it is much better buy with better fuel economy, cheaper service and parts and not looking boxy. If fit and finish, and reliability is improved, it is a world class car and fun to drive around. Demand will be lot more than supply and lot of other countries are also interested in Nano. Mamta delayed all the plan of Tata and caused huge loss to Tata for no fault. | Reply

    Nano looks very beautiful and promising city or second family car. This is not a car for highway and long drive. But details available are very little and sketchy. I read somewhere that it has 660 cc engine producing 33 bhp and will come in two versions, basic and deluxe (?) with features. I feel engine is too week to put A/C because even a low power a/c, which is not able to cool efficiently but puts too much load on engine to drive. Even 220 cc mobike engine produces 20 bhp and 20 Nm torque. So this engine must be tweaked to produce over 50 bhp in deluxe model at least to run a/c and drive the car or don't put a/c altogether. Otherwise people will get disappointed and will cause deluxe model to fail in market. Any idea about price with added features. Guys be realistic with your expectation, a 1 lakh car can not have automatic or diesel or air bag, it is not BMW. India has been driving Maruti 800 for Rs. 2 lakh with bare bone, for 30 years with ancient technology and no feature - most unsafe car in world. Suzuki has been in Black for 30 years due to profit of Maruti 800. | Reply

    MR Manoharan venkidusamy it shows from your comments that you don't even know about the car. FYI the car engine is in the rear AND NOT in the front. Second, this car is meant for city driving not on highways. I just hate the cynics because they NEVER try to find faults in Maruti Suzuki cars which are actually dangerous. People in India are so single minded that they would accept anything from the Suzuki stable but when a Indian like Mr Ratan Tata comes up with a revolutionary car and that too at a price which is much lesser than a 800. The 800 is like 25-30 years old and Suzuki is still dumping that piece of crap in India. Nowhere else in the world you would find a 800, but people in India god knows why do they buy it. Once again to the cynics who don't know the facts and still comment on it here are the hard facts. Nano is a city car, it has the latest engine and is made with highest technology standards regarding safety I am damn sure Tata will add airbags etc later down the line. Nano car is not made of plastic. The engine is at the rear. The one lakh price will be only for the basic model with no ac, etc etc. The fully loaded models will be around 1.5-2 lakhs. | Reply

    Surely Tata Nano is going to be a Mega Mover not only in India but world Over.As R.Tata's "Promise is a Promise" assurance is fullfilled by launching this car for a common man at this 1 Lakh price point, many people I've heard are waiting to buy out this car in rural areas it is almost a Volume Game for Tata-Nano with smart pricing the Quality has to be maintained with cheaper spareparts and after sales service. | Reply

    I think its best effort from TATA motors to bring out this car. There are certain fears people expressed about the safety of this car. But if you see the price paying for this car, it would be definitely safer than a bike. as for aspulsar hitting the car , if you see the front bonnet stores the spare wheel. One should note that its not empty and hollow bonnet. It will offer some sort of reasonable protection at least better than maruthi 800. Dude you are talking about ABS /Airbags stuff. You need to shred at 5lack for buying the car with these features. | Reply

    Hello All, Just spend 1 minute for before book TATA's nano car, I agree that it is very cheap car in the world. None of the car makers around the world has not offering this kind of very cheap car. Hatts off to TATA's nano car team. If considered about safety, I don’t think so nano has adequate safe equipment has installed to protect driver and co passengers. If they are using the word "car" and marketing the product; it should meet at least some international standard to secure the passengers. Some examples, Just see the engine bonnet. It’s very short. Consider your driving this car in the speed of 50 kmph in high ways; unfortunately you met an accident with car\byke. Do you think this car will save you and your family? Even a pulsar motor cycle had hit the nano's front portion loss is going to huge for car and even family too. And, they used very low material for car’s upholstery. If you drive the car for 2 hrs continuously the driver will feel like sitting under gas stove. Huge amount of heat will generate. We are buying car for safe travel for family members. If any thing goes wrong, loss is big for us. Not for Tata I agree that EU-Nano has good safety system installed. (ABS, Air bags) Will tata sell EU-nano car in India for 1 lac? Definitely No. TATA sales\ engineers team much concernd about price and hence they used very low\cheap material for nano car manufacturing. So please wait for some years save money and buy good car.     The car is wack and unsafe.. I agree that it is cheap .. but at what cost - the cost of indians getting killed in such unsafe car.. the tires are very small, no airbags, safety belts only in front.. I wonder they even did any crash testing on these... dont we know how crazy truck drivers kill people in automobiles like jeep, ambassadors etc... time again it shows how our automobile industry cares about cost of the car and not the quality .. | Reply

    Nano is a true wonder of intent, planning, logistics and execution. Nano will bring to the auto industry the kind of radical change that ford did with the assembly line manufacutaring in the early 1900's.     Tata is gonna a face a huge problem with Nano....they are never gonna be able to make it fast enough. Wonder how they will solve this issue....Even if they churn it out at 100% capacity of pune + sanand + pantnagar....doesnt look like I can lay my hands on one within '09... | Reply

    It looks so fresh and innovation of century. Every single bone of this car is young. Engine is more powerful than Maruti 800 but still more economical. It will be an excellent car for first time buyer as well as second car for running around. Does it mean cremation time for new cars under 1000 cc? | Reply
