Road Test: Fiat Linea Emotion

Fiat's making a comeback with the brilliant new Linea which will then pave the way for the company's future line up. Muntaser Mirkar takes the big sedan through the grind.

Ever wondered how, when Indian manufacturers are mentioned abroad, they're more often than not laughed at and ridiculed? Well, it's the same in India too. Head to France and say you drive a Peugeot and no one's going to question your choice - not the case in the homeland though, is it? Walk into Italy and mention you drive a Fiat and you're immediately at home. But back in India, the company's not exactly got that same great grace going for itself has it? In a way a lot of Indian motoring does owe itself to Fiat - after all it was the Padmini that a whole bunch of the older Indian generation was driving along in before Maruti threw the spanner in the works with its cute, little 800.

Since then, Fiat has tried a number of times to make a comeback into the mindsets of the Indian populace as a manufacturer of quality cars - notably with the Uno and later on with the Palio. While Fiat's hatch on the world car platform - the Palio did catch the fancy of young Indians especially with the 1.6 litre engine option, other factors again faltered the company's reputation on Indian soil. Owners of the Palio 1.6 though, still swear by the car. After shifting from Kurla to a spanking new facility at Ranjangaon, Fiat again hoped to revive their brand name in India and this came in the form of the Palio Stile and in more recent times the cute Fiat 500. While the 500 was bogged down by CBU-scale import duties that took the price tag over Rs14 lakh, the small car was only to set the flavour for the launch of some of Fiat's more significant models.

Braving the current economic downturn is the fruit of the Tata-Fiat partnership in India - the Linea. The car is no stranger to the rest of the world with it doing service in Eastern Europe, Latin America and the Middle East since its launch in 2007. For India though, the car will be attempting to rewrite the laws of the sedan segment.

I bought a Fiat Linea Emotion and took delivery on 13.3.2009.In the past year that I have had the car, I have had problems relating to coolant leakages ( within 3 days of buying the car and the car remained in the workshop for 14 days as K.B.Motors did not have th requisite ‘O’ ring I am told). The chrome outer door handles falling off( repetitively over a period of 10 months, till they came up with the right compound ), Gear box trouble ( it had to be opened up), bonnet getting stuck, starting problems etc. I have attached an XL file with the details.Even now as I write, my car is in the workshop with starting trouble and they are unable to offer me a definite reply as they are unable to diagnose the problem till now.More than the car we are dissapointed with the Service provided to us by K.B.Motors,the Auth. dealers, as they never seem to have spare parts in stock. | Reply

Sx4 is a great car that provides power and good ride quality both within the city and on the highway. Gearbox is decent and Mileage is around 10kmpl within the city and around 12.5 on the highways Decent interiors, A/C with climate control and music system with controls on the steering wheel make it a pleasure to drive | Reply

I own a Linea diesel bought in Feb 2009 and has done 17000 kms till date. Trust me, apart from minor door rattles, i have faced absolutely no issues. Gives me an average of 15.5 kmpl inside city and 21 kmpl on highways. I totally disagree with the so called "underpowered" term used for engine. I feel its more than adequate for our roads and traffic. Except for the initial lag, the mid range performance is excellent. Have touched 140kmph mark on numerous occasions and the car feels like it is doing just 100 or 110kmph. Rock solid. The ride comfort is simply brilliant. | Reply

The Linea is a beautiful car. While the engine might be considered underpowered it actually is perfect for Indian roads. Also I'm completely certain that these people crying for more power would be the same people who say that the Palio was bad as it had low average. Also what's the point of buying an expensive high powered car if there are no roads that allow you to use any of that power you paid so much for ?I have both the Linea PK Diesel | Reply

FIAT Linea is a great car to have in its premium sedan (C ) segment. it is almost like owning a D segment car at the price of a C segment car.I have FIAT Linea Dynamic Petrol (FIRE 1.4 Lt Engine) and it delivers good performance in Mumbai city. The ride quality is superb. The interiors are far superior than SX4, VERNA, HONDA CITY, FORD FIESTA. The suspension is also good. You feel like sitting in a high end sedan. As far as cost is concerned, this is really great value for money car. The higher end variant EMOTION has almost more features than other cars in this price range. The build quality is also superb. The wheel base is much higher than other cars. Overall, you must take a Test Drive of FIAT LINEA if you are planning to buy HONDA CITY, VERNA, SX4 of FORD FIESTA; before finalizing your decision.FIAT has done a wonderful job, in getting almost all things right in case of LINEA.If FIAT can further improve their Marketing and After Sales Service; then this sedan is going to rock on Indian road soon. | Reply

I don't know why this apathy against Fiat. I own a Fiat Uno,diesel since 1998 Nov. I am very much satisfied. The car is giving me 21 to 21.5 kmpl with AC on highways, at a speed of 90kmph. Moreover I am using the car to transport 50X10 kgs of fertilisers to my sugarcane field through potholed roads in Kolhapur. The suspension is still going strong without any hitch. Doing regular servicing goes a long way. The only nagging problem I had was with the A/C evaporater and the drier. The car is so robust that once I had an accident and the right side of the car was ripped off. No one, mind you No one was hurt. We were 5 in the car. The car is made to last | Reply

If u have 700k in pocket and in market to buy 4 wheel, it has to be Linea at this moment. I just can't stop looking at it. As far as power is concerned, it is NOT AT ALL under powered. | Reply

I am Driving Linea and have driven around 7000kms First of all coming to Average it gives a decent average of 12.5 ltr in Delhi city which is quiet good with AC (set at a temp of 20)on and with the average driving speed of 27km/hr. Coming to the Service part i got the first service done and the car was picked from my home and returned back to home after the service and I have no complaints and one more thing i will like to tell to my fellow friends who are interested in Hondas and Hyundais please note that the Fiat cars need service only after 15000kms and not 10000kms as most cars Do. The Ride Quality is quiet superb and it takes bumps easily. I am so far totally satisfied with the car and moreover if Linea is Diesel variant then they are supplying the engines to so called Swifts and Indicas of the world which is a prooven diesel engine. Car is reasonably priced. The features are incomparable to any other car in this category or even higher category and at the end I will like to make a point at what price you are buying this car. Its a steal at this price and turns lot of heads, | Reply

There is so much said about underpower of Linea by non-owners. As an owner of Linea Diesel let me tell you it is not at all underpowered. Actually its mid range performance is briliant combiined with low end torque that it is good for city as well as highways. People just tend to compare 0-100 kmph performance only. Actually 40-100 or 60-100 or 60-120 perofrmance of Linea is even better than not just City but even Civic. Top end it may taper off at 170 but I feel more confident driving above 150 in Linea than in City/Civic | Reply

I have been driving a Fiat Palio 1.2ELX for last 7 years . It is still rock solid and still gives me the kick when I push it above 100 around a bend or when overtaking. Zero body roll. May be I am a rough driver but I have not seen too many cars overtaking me. Had a major accident five years back when a pickup truck hit full force @60kmph from behind with the car full of people. The glass and tail lamps broke and the hatch door had a serious dent (note "dent" but no crumpling) but no one got a scratch. From the sides you could not tell the difference. I guess FIAT knows a bit about crash safety. I say so because I once saw a Santro being hit similarly. Years later and many a potholed roads in Bangalore, it seems it will pass another six years without fuss. Fiat could have done a better interior job though. In the extremely unlikely event of a crash (front/side/rear) you will understand the true value of these rugged European cars - as opposed to the sofa on wheels Japs/Koreans. Just swing the heavy doors with your hand or try pressing hard the metal with your thumb - and you will know. Service is good enough - but may not be as cheap as Maruti. Spare availability has never been an issue with me.It is funny to see what people perceive as worth buying. It is often not fully rational. Like every women going for various variants of ill-designed flip-flops these days as compared to the sturdy stylish pumps/heels of yesteryear. By the way, I also have a Indica 2004 petrol - but that's another story !I have a minor grudge on the front grille design of both Punto and Linea though. It just does not look European ! May be I am getting old. | Reply

I own a Fiat uno Diesel which gives me a trouble free drive, 20 kmpl mileage, I think fiat should relaunch it Brazilian version of Fiat Uno. Flex in India to compete with maruti Alto, I am sure that this will be a grand success , this time because this time customers wont have to worry about the service since it now in the hands of TATA, besides Fiat could also relaunch its Weekend and endavour model instead of selling Indica Marina. Let Indian Roads get floodded with New Uno Flex. | Reply

It is not just service, FIAT did not bring in correct models are correct time. Like when M800/Zen was ruling they introduced Palio instead of a car like MATIZ.. This time it seems they got it rite. yes you are rite Weekend they should relaunch. | Reply

I am about to buy fiat lenia As every body is concerned with service and engine size, I think 1.3 lit diesel engine is sufficient i have test derived ford fiesta and lenia no doubt that lenia was lacking in this comparison but it was not very great difference in performance. although i am not buying a Ferrari so i am very much satisfied with over all performance of the car.I think main draw back of fiat was its service, so hopefully with this understanding fiat management is providing service with TATA. So, i think lenia is worth buying. | Reply

The engines, both petrol and diesel, might prove to the Achilles' heel for the Linea. Test drove both the models a few days back. Both the models are underpowered. The turbo lag in the diesel is terrible. You feel like you are not going anywhere and it is very noisy. it might be a good diesel, but only for small cars and not for a decent sized sedan like the Linea. The petrol is better than the diesel but it is still not adequate for the car. It will just get you from point A to point B. period. There is no driving pleasure. Secondly the driver's position is not good. the steering is too close to the body so one has to bend the elbows more than in other cars. On the other hand test drove A-Star today. Brilliant driving position, very peppy and perfect vehicle if ur a single or have a small family. If any single person or a person having a small kid is planning to buy a Linea. think again. Buy a A-Star. you will not regret the decision. It is a brilliant car. The Linea might look great outwardly but its driving position plus the engines need lot of improvement. | Reply

I have tested the petrol version. To keep the prices low FIAT has not provided the latest technological features like Electronic power steering,McPherson stuts, less torque engine. The initial pickup is really low. Interior plastics are cheap & flimsy specially on the A pillars( which will become noisy during running after a year). | Reply

Hi Guys, There is a misconception gng on among most of us on Fiat Linea (Diesel), that it's under powered.Pl don't only loo at BHP or the CC. one more factor is TORQUE (The strength, the pull factor) which is very high for this car at a very low rpm - 90ps @ 4000 rpm and 203 Nm @2500 rpm. No other car has got this.Just chk once. This MJD engine is among the world;s best diesel engine, highly computerized, developed jointly by FIAT - GM - SUZUKI.It beats all the cars in the segment. Just drive once. Again, Pl don't go on BHP or CC, look at Torque. This tiny engine will blow enough power with superb fuel efficiency. And don't worry about service. TATA's have improved a lot. They'll take care. Second, except regular interval service, this car doesn't require anything. Good Luck ! | Reply

No matter how good looking or good performance ur car is, if the spare parts are not available even in A1 cities like Chennai, bangalore its pathetic. I have been driving a FIAT Uno for the last nine years. In addition to regular oil change, I needed to service leaking break fluid and get the carburator cleaned once each. These could be taken cared of by my friendly local mechanic (I live in a small place). FIAT does not have service centers at every nook and corner of the country because FIAT cars do not need much servicing. I would not drive a car that needs service centers at every street corner and more. I have been bumped from rear by Maruti cars thrice. There is not even a scratch on my bumper! | Reply

I own a Palio. I was expecting Linea to have more powerful engine. It is not going to do any good for Fiat. Liena is not going to make any difference in competition for SX4 Verna Or Honda. WE NEEED MORE POWERFUL ENGINE OPTION ! Atleast 140PS Option I will book it rite away :) | Reply

Fiat has always made excellent cars. They started with Uno which had 1.92 lacs initial bookings. Premier screwed Uno. Then came Siena and Palio, excellent cars again.I own a Palio for 7 years now and can't think of any other hatchback matching it in Suspension and interior space and comfort department. Fiat cars are of solid build quality. They don't rattle like Marutis in 20k kms.Tell me one Maruti car which has got even decent space!! I am going in for Grande Punto next! | Reply

I own Palio for little more then 6 years. I am satisfied with the car performance but servicing is still an issue even after collaboration with TATA. Belive me TATA doesn't know how to service a non-commercial vehicle. They treat all the vehicles like INDICA. I drove the car in Bangalore / Pune and now in Delhi but servicing remains the issue. It never has happened that I didn't need to repeat deler for some minor repair. so there is always somethig which bugs you. I also have Hundai Santro and it is smooth as butter on hot pan. So overall Linea is a good buy, excellent on performance but after sales service is hit hard. Fiat spares as for the ages is still an issue. Hence one always need to check with delers if they have the spare available befor asking for repair. | Reply

Linea gives 90ps @ 4000 rpm and 203 Nm @2500 rpm. http://www.fiat-india.com/TechSpec-linea.aspx?TechspeId=1&c=y&ModelId=5 This link doesnt seem to be giving the correct info. If you look at the brochure OR www.fiatlinea.in you will discover that petrol Linea gives 90 ps @ 6000 rpm and not 4000 rpm which means it is definitely underpowered wrt its rivals. And defnitely not having a very strong "Power to Weight" ratio. Although on all other counts it seems to be outstanding. | Reply

FIAT Linea delivers good performance. We do not feel that, it is underpowered. Considering its solid build quality, the riding quality is great.People are mentioning that, it is under powered, but actually it is quite excellent. | Reply

Fiat vehicle's service is still a problem. Tata's service set up has not built up the competence to service my Loving Palio, that I decided that I shall go out of FIAT, bought a Ford SXi Fiesta. Still i love and keep my Palio and FIAT cannot survive with Tata's second grade services. LINEA is awesome and service backup.....??.... | Reply

I fully agree with Kishore. I own a 9 year old Siena and a 23 year old M800. Believe it, or not, I get better service from TATA than from Maruti dealers who do not want to touch an old car, however well maintained. (Siena is not in production too!) So much for Maruti service. Even by the yard stick of our Indian public, every third car from Maruti has been a flop. There's no doubt, FIAT know how to make a good car. When I do decide to replace my Siena, it can only be a FIAT that can replace her. | Reply

The best thing about fiat is it has no resale value. So ver good for customers looking for a cheap car with good looks and performance oriented. So would like to wait for 2 years to own a linea which would probably cost not more than an maruti 800. | Reply
Apte G (18 November 2009 22:57) Reply to Ajay Sharma
This is completely wrong in our opinion. Resale value is dependent various factors, not just on the performance of the car.People in India are buying Maruti cars even though the ride quality, interior, looks of Maruti cars are poor. The space in side Maruti car is always a big question mark. The best selling Maruti cars also make you feel completely uncomfortable due its poor design and space constraints. So, going by people's judgment is not a criteria for car selection. One must compare his/her own needs, and go for best value for money car. FIAT has good design capabilities. Only thing is that, they need to improve the marketing and after sales service, and you will see that, FIAT cars will rock!!! | Reply

For all you guys who do not know about the auto world, Honda Civic across world comes with a 1.2 ltr engine with a higher BHP/PS. A 1248 CC engine is good enough for the LINEA but should have sported a decent 110PS which would have made it a beauty & beaset. | Reply

Good The style is absolute stunning .The interior is too good in it class. The boot is very roomy Head lamps are awesome .The blue and me technology is cool. The Bad The engine is certainly underpowered for such a big car. I was driving the test vehicle with just two people and vehicle is refusing to move in first and second gear. It just sits and feels like dragging on the road .The vehicle starts to move to only after the RPM hits above 2000 I am wondering what thought had gone behind putting 1300 Kg vehicle on a 1248 cc engine . The total weight of Palio style Mulijet with the same engine is 1090 compared to Linea diesel with 1290.That’s a straight 200 KG increase and when combined with 5 people with average weight weight of 65 KG and luggage the vehicle is gonna drag on the road Agreed that they have tweaked the engine hp by 11 but that’s not gonna make a difference because the underlying factor is about the 1248cc engine I have no doubts about the 1248cc Multijet Engine. But you cannot fix a Auto rickshaw Engine to a Mini van and expect it to perform The Big Question What would make a customer choose Linea over SKODA Octavia with powerful performing Diesel engine and Verna which is powerful than Linea Ajai Die hard fiat fan | Reply

I see no reason why Linea shouldn't click well in India. It has everything going for it. Amazing exterior design, interiors, pricing etc. As for its rivals, it competes directly with Verna, SX4, Fiesta, Aveo, Lancer and City as far as price segment is concerned and it is a notch above most of these drab looking cars. As for Fiat's reputation in India, it should get a boost and change the perception of poor service back up. I keep asking lot of people, so in how many Indian cities can you buy and get serviced a Nissan, Skoda, Volkswagen and the answer is max 4 cities. Does that make them poor and extremely poor service coverage cars. Your answer is as good as mine. With TATA alliance, pls expect to get works done in more than 100 cities and feel free to drive it out anywhere in India. Fiat has produced great cars and has created hatchback segment in India with Palio. I am sure Linea would do great in Indian market. All the best to Fiat!!! | Reply

wake up everyone, smell the coffee! how long are you gonna crib and criticize fiat service...i mean, can someone describe an ideal service experience...i own a 1.6 palio and the service has been good, nothing to crib about...do you even know that the Linea has a greater service interval compared to others in its class...so no frequent visits to the service center. anyways, this is the classic indian "herd mentality" and the media seems to be only happy to take a poke at fiat whenever they get a chance...as if other car makers deliver the holy grail of customer experience call "customer delight"...keep blaming fiat and buy junk like the indica and swift that get's its heart from you know where?...oh, FIAT again! | Reply

Fiat Linea is a great car having gorgeous looks which is thoughtfully designed. I had a look at the car on its launch and had the pleasure of test driving the diesel version on Pune-Bangalore Highway and the drive was really fantastic. As a matter of fact, it is much better designed than Honda City and Toyota Corolla and the engine running is very smooth. Overtaking on the highway is cool and one does not feel lack of power as given out in the review, since I have the experience of driving for last 28 yrs on wide variety of cars and other vehicles in various types of terrain. Also the new features in the car add zing to it. Ultimately a great car by Fiat, not that other Fiat cars like Uno, Sienna, Petra and Palio were not great-in fact they too were great in their segment. It is only the Indian mindset which has a problem in appreciating what is good. WELL DONE FIAT FOR BRINGING OUT A VERY GOOD PRODUCT AGAIN! WISHING THE FIAT TEAM ALL THE LUCK & SUCCESS. | Reply

You are absolutely right regarding Fiat cars. They leave the competition far behind when it comes to technology ie. build quality, engines, etc. I myself am driving Fiat Uno (Petrol 1.0 ltr.) for the last nine and half years. The car is absolutely amazing, it still returns an average of 20-21 kmpl on highway. When buying this car in year 2000, I had oter options like maruti zen, Indica etc. But I never looked at options as I was completely smitten by Uno. Cosider this man, a car that has earned not once but three times car of the year in Europe. Dealers let down Fiat with their wrong attitudes and thus rendered the company helpless in India which left the customers at the mercy of roadside mechanics who experiment at the cost of the customer's pocket. But still it is appreciable that Fiat has come back on its own with great world class products like Linea and Punto, which raises questions that if Fiat can give a feature rich product at a competative pricing why not the other car manufacturerers in India. I was completely smitten by Linea when I saw it first on the internet. After its launch I went to the nearest dealer to have deko and a ride. Believe me , I was in different world when driving the car and I requested the salesman for another test ride of the car which the person was more than happy to oblige for. This product is at least two notches higher in the segment and could do well to compare with likes of civic or corrola. I would like to suggest Fiat TO CONCENTRATE ON GIVING A GREAT AFTER SALES SERVICE AND SWEEP THE COMPETITION OFF ITS FEET. Fiat cars are made last for a lifetime and yes they will last and bear several wars too. | Reply

We also agree with this. After using FIAT LINEA for about a week, we are confident that, this is one of the best cars in C segment at the moment in India. We feel that, the power is sufficient for Indian roads, ride quality is superb, interiors are world class, exteriors are far ahead of other cars. What else you would want from FIAT cars?? | Reply

To those who question the aftersales service of Fiat in India, I can bet that you are not Fiat owners. Today Tata Fiat offers the kind of service you'd be really hard pressed to find fault with. Either technically or in terms of customer interaction, it is extremely confidence inspiring. Availability of spares might be the only drawback of buying Fiat. As for quality of the car itself, well, the Palio is really well built and today after two years, my car is as good as new. Slightly noisier, maybe, but I'd say its as good as new. Caveat - My experience is based on my Palio ownership and interaction with Concorde Motors in Bangalore. I dont know and cant vouch for others. | Reply

Last chance Fiat many of us say. Let us hope their service and also their product is perfect. No more gloss on brittle Italian sheen please otherwise the car and company plus Indian partner can be facing heat from their own inabilities. Pricing is critical but having a humble outlook with no large bombastic talk is even more critical. Will this be this case or business as usual with Fiat flattering to deceive as always? | Reply

And once again fiat is trying to make comeback into indian market. But a question is how many times fiat will repeat these words?Fiat tried to make comeback first with uno and then with palio but got only initial responses. Both cars were good but the problem was with the service backup. If we look at indian market on one side there are companies like maruti, hyundai, toyota, honda all known for good products with very good service backup. On the other side there are ford, general motor, fiat all known for not so good products and poor service backup. So at the end fiat made alliance with tata to solve the service problem .And now fiat is ready with linea.Linea is a good looking car with loads of features. But iit has to directly compete with two successfull cars.In diesel category it has to compete with hyundai verna and in petrol with new honda city.So this time it's going to very tough for fiat to make comeback into indian market.Best of luck for fiat! | Reply
