Maruti Suzuki Ritz Special Coverage

Maruti Suzuki Ritz: First Drive!

Maruti Suzuki Ritz

Suzuki pulls a Ritzy move out of its small car bag of tricks to offer a very competent alternative to all the large hatchbacks on the market today. Adil Jal Darukhanawala has the gen on this lil' performer after an exclusive first drive

Let's get one thing clear straight away about Suzuki's new supermini. It ain't going to be making waves as a Wagon R replacement which many of you thought was on the cards but then that is the good thing, both for Maruti Suzuki and also for the consumer who wants a more family-oriented large hatchback.

Ford Fusion

Great for Maruti Suzuki because it allows the product planners to move the Wagon R into a newer perch and position in the market (think taxi or utility) and at the same time the firm's premium hatchback portfolio gets enhanced.

Page 3 :  What powers the Ritz?

It is this portfolio enhancement which is pretty noteworthy because ever since the company began to pack in small minis after small minis with just marginal increments in space and equipment to swamp the majority of the A2 segment, the new Ritz is the family-oriented offering which joins the Swift in the premium hatch segment. And there is no doubt that where the Swift is the iconic personalized car for the sporty individual, the Ritz clearly is family-focused.

Maruti Suzuki Ritz

The large hatchback segment is proliferating and Maruti Suzuki being the small car segment leader has cleverly engineered the Ritz to be bang on the money keeping in mind its likely rivals already on the market as well as those which it will have to deal with in the coming month! Already the Swift encounters competition in the form of the Hyundai i20 and the Skoda Fabia at the upper end of the spectrum while others like the brilliantly conceived Tata Indica Vista resides along side it. The Ritz is expected to be placed just around the Swift but with a choice of a brand new petrol motor and the same DDIS oil burner as in the Swift, this is the car which strengthens Maruti Suzuki's hand when it would come to squaring off against the Hyundai i20 right now and the Honda Jazz plus the Fiat Grande Punto which are expected next month.

The Ritz is not what this Suzuki is known as elsewhere in the world, Splash being the name given to what the Japanese firm terms it as a "worldwide mini-wagon". I think that this is the single biggest detail which shows how far Suzuki has kept its Japanese styling idiosyncrasies in the deep freeze and adopted contemporary European design to pervade every bit of its thought process. It wasn't that the car had to also do duty as a badge-engineered Opel Agila in Europe, but clearly having a European-focused design and dynamic capability has helped the Japanese small car maker to keep the cash registers ticking.

I am a proud owner of Ritz diesel VDi. The 1.3 L diesel engine is pucca and very refined too. Ritz has got enough reasons to delight me, as it has cool blue interiors, with relaxed driving position, nice leg rooms and head rooms and sufficient boot. Ritz has good ground clearance and suspension is great even in bad roads. If you are looking for a hatchback in 4-5 lakh range, I recommend Ritz. | Reply

Ritz is a fanatastic family car. With two kids and my wife, I am happy to drive this car safely on highways and it returns a stunning mileage of 21 kmpl in highways at 70 kmph speed. Ritz has got usage space on the inside and the boot is adequate for a family. Thanks to Maruti for providing a value car at affordable price | Reply

Ritz gives a power of 85ps, which is amazing. NO NEED of switching to 1st gear AT ALL. LITERALLY. U can start with the second gear! and even if u drive at low rpm, there are NO VIBRATIONS. THE A/C IS SUPERB. | Reply

some times maruti suzuki wise and some times stupid. wise becoz of m 800, wagon R, ritz stupid becoz of alto, estilo, a-star, swift becoz when a guy like me having a height of 5 11 cant sit in these stupid cars as stearing column touches the legs. spark is much better than all these cars | Reply
Hemant (11 August 2010 13:57) Reply to rk
U may be sitting too close to Dash... as i dont find any problem with any of these cars and i am 5'11" too. Alto to some extent i can agree.. but not for any other of these hatchbacks u mentioned. Spark certainly have lesser leg space than these models, moreover you brush your knee with the central console in spark. | Reply

Hi Harjot, just to confirm once again. How comfortable u have been on highways with your ritz?. I m owning a wagon R now, n planning to change it soon. For city drive i find its Ok but on highways, probably it doesnt give that confident feeling against overturning at high speeds or sometimes even on straight stretch when u come across speeds in range 110-120km/hr.

This is a new trend being set around the world now in the hatchbacks....and check what is the sales no of SPLASH by Maruti in Europe, and Vaxhaull AGILA in UK......then you will probably get some insight of how the truck hit the back of Ritz.....this is an excellent car with excellent features, the rear being carved in, avoids it being kissed by others on the road. | Reply

I don't know why we people compare HYUNDAI and Suzuki. You should know that Hyundai Is a korean and Suzuki is Japanese company, both are seling thr product now MARUTi is only the word which they are using to make fool of Indians. We should accept this on world level Suzuki lies somewhr below 15 and HYUNDAI lies in Top Five with TOYOTA GM FORD. Swift is Swift at the same time VERNA is VERNA SONATA is SONATA they have thr own qualities. We have full right to buy what we like but making a premind is harmfull. You should buy those car which satisfy you in every respect not by any influence or image of the company. | Reply

Actually Fiat and Tata approached maruti for combined production But Maruti rejected this offer...And finally, this roumer orginated from one Maruti dealer. One more thing GM was a stake holder in Both Fiat and Suzuki that time this licence were issued to Maruti and GM | Reply

A good thing that Maruti has done with the launch of the Ritz this time is to launch the Diesel and the petrol variants together and release both fueled vehicles in the market at the same time. A cause for this would be the flurry of car launches scheduled thro the second half of this year that are in the same price point as the Ritz. Thanks to the competition MUL is on its toes this time. | Reply

Many a people in the comments before me have mentioned that thers is loads of space and leg space. I advice people to also mention their height as I being 5'11" found the leg space in the front and back seats of the ritz extremely cramped. I at the same time am extremely comfortable in a wagon R and swift front seats at least. Back seats of the swift and wagon R are also cramped on leg space. Please PEOPLE hence request you to mention your height and weight for us to understand your relative defination of space. | Reply

I drove Ritz Vdi for about 200kms last week. Its a spacious car for a family of 5. Roomy, responsive and short turning radius makes it a good value for money car. Little sluggish than swift vdi but still a good buy. Interiors are very good and seating is very comfortable. Enough boot space dispite of the look at the back. | Reply

I test drove the Ritz, read a lot about the Car in many auto magzines. the car has superior handling and is one of the most spacious car in this segment. Boot of the car is good enough for a family, if you think its less then you shoud rather buy an SUV. The design and european styling is superior. please do not forget the trends that are followed in European countries are superior n hence things which r good r slowly adopted by the developing countries...give the car time guys...you will fall in love with the shape. please read the auto magzs guys (june n july issues) the car has been highly appreciated by the experts...if you still have a doubt then please test drive it...the car will speak for itself.. | Reply

i am driving my ritz zxi for last 10 days. response of the engine is very good. drive is extremly comfortable, had no problems on a very bumpy road. gear shift, ac, leg space are no issues at all. even the rear leg space is very comfortable. as far as looks r concerned, its a personal thing. i loved the rear look instantly but many of my friends didnt. boot is slightly less but enough for this segment. the interiors are appealing, must mention that it is so only in zxi. not in lxi or vxi. maruti's marketing strategy | Reply

Yes ! looks are only cosmetic and personal likngs, the car should be functional and economical, at the same time have good value for the money . You may like the design, you may dislike it, but as someone told its European styling... Indeed its an example of nice European style... But Suzuki should understand that this is India... If you have to sell a product design it on the needs of Indian buyer. An indian family car should fulfill the requirements of an Indian family... And here you are with reduced boot space... Suzuki stop fooling your indian buyers.. give something new like Hudai did with i10 and Tata with Vista.. or start counting your days... | Reply

I had a Test Drive of the Ritz Diesel. In terms of the internal space it is certainly lesser than the Indica Vista, specially the Rear Seating so it’s ideally comfortable for two normal size adults and a Child at the Back seating. For a person as tall as 5.8 ft is on the front seat the leg room is just a bit less, if the seat is moved behind to make more leg room than the person setting behind would not be comfortable. What is most disappointing is the step brotherly treatment given to the interiors and features between the Petrol and the Diesel version. The interior of the Petrol being much better with Duel Tone colors matching the external color, where as the Diesel interior is only Gray/Black with NO climate control AC as in the top end Petrol. No option of Air Bags in Diesel which is available in top end Petrol (Not even Optional). Optional ABS in Diesel Yes at Rs 20000/- which is worth it but with a waiting period is minimum 45 Days. Top end Petrol ABS is optional of default I am not sure. Most Car makers give this step brotherly treatment to Diesel Cars, do they think that people who prefer Diesel have a lack of taste and refinements...They are so wrong and I hope this reaches them and soon.If your priority is internal space and comfort I’d say Indica Vista with the same engine as the Ritz, External looks is your choice as I find both good in their own rights with a few plus to Ritz, Internal looks Indica Vista is good too but Ritz scores better in style and trend (the petrol version). Indica Vista’s dual tone combination is much better than the Grey/Black of the Ritz.In terms of Value for money I’d say Indica Vista as is currently offering free insurance worth Rs 18000/- if purchased before 27th May with Two Years 1 Lakh Kilometer warranty as compared to Maruti Ritz at 2 years 40,000 Kilometer warranty only. No ABS option in Indica Vista which is sad. Drive wise both are good with both weighing around 1100 Kilos. Hope my option Helps. | Reply

Ritz looks great even from backside...I wanted to replace this with my Wagon-R. But when I visited to see this car phyisically...thats very disappointing. Boot space is something that not there at all....if people feel this would be going to be a family car then boot space is must...specially for those family have kids like me.This seems a good car for office goar and not for family. Since Jagdish kattar is replaced by a Japanese CEO of MUL, not a single good product came out ecept Dzire which is extention of Swift. Their A-star is big disappointment as well. We Indian need boot space as well and this need to understand by this Japanese CEO... | Reply

Great improvement from the stable of Maruti Suzuki. The test drive is short on details and candid assessment. However. comentators are going to town with eulogies to Vista from the Tata stable. Unfortunately, the service dimension is so horrible with the Tata Motors, like highly deficient servicing both in customer relationship and technical competencies, pilfering and replacement with defective parts and many other hedaches for the owner that it is not worth even a look leave alone compoarison.Ritz needs a good comaparative assessment for drivability and after sales service. The price comparison across segment competitor is good and needs to be extended further for other traits as mentioned above. | Reply

well guys first things first. the diesel engine of RITZ, SWIFT and DEZIRE is one from FIAT. also FIAT is in a jv with TATA. the same engine powers the VISTA. so an intelligent choice is obviously VISTA. secondaly i own a SWIFT-P and a VISTA ANNIVERSARY-P. Trust me VISTA is way ahead of swift in all terms. looks, comfort, seeting, drivability etc etc.. also c what MUL is offering in the RITZ price tag. nothng. Now look at what TATA is giving with vista. HELL LOT OF SPACE plus endless luxuries.. SO I FEEL THAT VISTA IS WAY WAY BETTER THAN ANY MUL HATCHBACK. | Reply

n i must tell you guys one more thing that the long wait for swift n desire DDIS ( and also wud be on RITZ) is because of the engine. the engine is of FIAT's and as FIAT is supplying its engine to TATA now, they have very less to supply to maruti. result??--- a 6 month waiting on d diesel variant.. ** nd this is a confirmed news.... | Reply

Hi Guys,Maruti is not the only producers of car's in India. there are others who produces better car's and better services too. I had to pay an advance of 1 lakh for a Desire ZDI wait for 7 months, before the Dealer could even commit a delivery date. Indeirectly the sales Guy did ask for a Premium of 25,000 for a quick delivery. Finally I pulled out and went for the Fiesta which is a much Superior Car in terms of ride, Atleast i wouldnt have to hear those glass rattling noises and the Suspension noises creeping in fron the 3rd month. | Reply

I have heard you guys ranting and raving about Maruti and Hyundai. Here in Kuwait, Swift is meant for the ladies. Hyundai is regarded as a crap company. For e.g. u will get a new hyundai full option sedan for approx 3000 kD. Suzuki and other jap brands are expensive. Besides, Hyundai is notorious for copying others' designs and technology. Say, Hyundai i10 owes its design to Honda Jazz and Santro to Suzuki | Reply

This car again goes a long way to prove Maruti Suzuki's marketing strategy in India. They are trying their best to block as much shelf space (in mind of the customer) a spossible. There is nothing wrong in this. But if the story about mal practices is true...its a disgrace. This should be reported immidiately to the company people and even taken up in a consumer court. But I would still say...it looks BAD.:-) | Reply
  • Deepak (14 May 2009 15:29)
Hey Mr. SwiftOwner andFan: Gentle reminder: Swift engine is by Fiat... they are not gas-guzzlers. I am a Suzuki Fan as well... but the malpractices puts you off. You must drive the Verna.. I have given up on Swift Diesel...after I test drove that beauty.... I dont mind compromising the design a little if it can out match the performance, and more readily.. be available without any fuss... see this is what happens when you release a product, creat a demand and choke the supply..... Suzuki is not the end of the auto world... | Reply

To the anti-Suzuki'ans like Mr. Bujumbura and Mr. Auto Critic who are all in praises for the Hyundais, Tatas, Fiats - Go take a break before you guys compare them with Suzuki. Suzuki's designs are distantly better compared to the swollen-a** Vista and the old-a** Getz! Fiat can produce nothing but gas-guzzling cars!Mr. Murali, you got to be kidding! Hyundai's success is irritating Maruti ! what crap! Apart from the Santro and Accent (which are now fast vanishing from Indian roads) Hyundai has never been able to make its mark in the Indian market. And to those complaining about the unhealthy practices followed by the dealers, I guess this is an obvious ill-effect of the supply-demand chain. Had Suzuki's rivals been able to create something like the Swift, I guess their dealers would also have been involved in such malpractices. Chill guys! Yep,I do agree that such practices should be brought to the attention of Suzuki. The Ritz looks like a younger sibling of the Swift from the front, but looks like it has got several features that will make it stand apart from its elder brother. And yes the overall design is very much new and refreshing; unlike the yukkie Hyundais and the likes !! | Reply

The car surely looks pathetic. I agree with many readers that Maruti Suzuki stable has lost the lookers. None of its cars except for the SX4 look good. The new Zen is the worst looking car in the market. Wagon R is a bread box, A Star looks like a miss convieved design, Swift is OK but the rear looks funny. Dont even want to comment on the Dzire. As far as this car is concerned, it needs to be priced considerably below the Swift to have any success. The Swift looks much better and drives better too. The diesel one wont sell as the Swift and more importantly the Indica Vista will beat it to dust. | Reply

Thanks Subhash for seconding the allegation. I am sure it IS hand in glove with Maruti. I bet they are awre of unhealthy practice but they need the dealers to survive as well.... assuming the low profit margin to run such showrooms of Maruti specific. Since you did mention Sai, I had this experience with Kalyani Motors, who wanted me to buy accessories worth 40k.. Quite a similarity... wonder why | Reply

I agree with most of the comments.. Maruti is dumping crap. Firstly, they are not able to meet the demand for Swift Diesel. The local dealers in Bangalore say they can get one immediately if we buy some accessories... if you dont want that, then the waiting period is 3 months... ridiculous blackmail....doubt if Maruti is even aware of such unhealthy practices. Ritz comes with a new refreshed design which is completely new to India. the car is a great blend of technology and design.I drove Ritz thrice before finalising it. Engine is super smooth. Pick up is good. Driving this car is a pleasure. I found this car very roomy and comfortable. though in the beginning back design is looking very modern. | Reply
