Ford Figo: First Drive

Adil Jal Darukhanawala      1 Feb 2010

Buying a Car ? Get Best Deal

Ford Figo

The Yankees are turning on the heat in a most atypical segment, albeit one where all the action is to take place in 2010. The Ford Figo is set to fire up the "large" B-segment, says Adil Jal Darukhanawala

"I cannot do much about history but can only look forward to what we are about to bring to market and that is a very exciting product," proclaimed Michael Boneham, Ford India's boss man when I engaged him at the technical presentation on the new Figo in Goa. The fact about history is that one has to learn from it rather than repeat it as Ford has done so many times unfailingly in this country. Boneham and team, therefore, has the welcome yet onerous task of not running true to form but to usher in something which could recreate the magic for the Blue Oval in a class of car where it has achieved so much success elsewhere, especially in Europe. My only grouch though is that Ford continues to employ its legacy platforms for all its India-specific cars and the new Figo is no different.

Figo

That being said Ford has used one of the best bases it could have for the Figo's architecture, one based on the last generation Fiesta which was one of the most acclaimed hatchbacks of its kind internationally. To add it to the American car maker and built upon this platform with streaks of the firm's Kinetic design cues which not sit very well with the car's stance. The 'Figo-ratively cool' Figo had made it to our cover story in ET ZigWheels just a few months back but while that was just a non-running mockup, I must say that when we got to the first pilot production batch vehicles, the new Figo seemed to have become more substantial, more engaging and with a demeanour that seemed to suggest it could do the business.

A few figures will only go ahead and substantiate the point I am trying to make here since the India-focus of the car has been consistent throughout its production cycle. Out of the 84 prototype mules that were built for the Figo, 64 were manufactured at its Chennai plant right here in India. The development process was also as diligent as they come with over 8,000 individual tests, 20 crash tests and 7 lakh kilometers of testing which were performed on the 134 pre-production models that were made. Clearly Ford seems to be leaving very few stones unturned in the way of making the Figo a success in a market that gives back by the bucketful to products that subscribe and deliver to its few but stringent demands.

Around 10 is what i heard is the realistic figure on city drive. I heard Polo petrol gives even less. Rits Petrol on full AC gives around 12. I personally dont think the figure of 10 or 12 should bother. Guage the performance and after sales service. U either like a car or u dont. Dont ask kitan deti hai. | Reply

When compared to Figo, Ritz is far better. Ritz has refined engine and giving consistent mileage. Ritz has more ground clearance, Ritz is from Maruti and hence resale value will be too good! | Reply

R2D2 of Star Wars? Ritz is no doubt a brilliant performer, most refined K12 engine with excellent maneuverabliity thanks to lower wheel base and 4.6 turning radius compared to 4.9 of Figo. Ground clearance of Figo is just ok at 168 but its longer wheel base makes it seem shorter and prone to hit on bumpy roads but much better ride quality. Built quality of Figo is far better than Ritz. View of the road, both front and rear is much better than ritz. Hydraulic power steering of Figo gets u a much better feed back from steering compared to electronic power steering of Ritz, which gives u no feel. Its definitely tough making a choice since maruti has the best service network. My personal choice would still be White Figo Diesel, simple cause whats the fun of spending all the money yet not get the pleasure of driving a car. | Reply

i bought a ford figo diesel when it was launched .i heard about ford that their parts ar every costlier and very poor service from the dealer in kerala.my relatives did not permit to buy ford but i purchased. now i m very happy happy with my figo because it give me good mileage around 20 and comfort is excellent.now i run around 18000 km.service cost is very low upto this time and dealer service is excellent.i think people are simply blaming about ford and thier service. i did not get any experience from them. i m very happy with my ford figo.i think its the good car for indian road conditions. ford make a good move with introducing the ford figo. | Reply

hi guys i hav purchased a fod figo last month. the vehicle has some gud points and sum bad points. first let us see the gud points . i was actually confused btwn swift and figo. but finally i purchased a figo. THe vehicle has awesum interiiors compared to swift vxi. it also has additional features like music system and remote system etc etc which u don t get in swift as default. it also has distance to empty which is helpful which is absent in swift . for swift one has to book and wait for some time but for figo one can get it on d spot. The ac is awesum atleast better than swift .. the bad points of the vehicle is dat the mileage is worst approx 10-12kmpl. the height is less compared to swift . less ground clearance and no rear power windows. | Reply

Sumit Dey (04 July 2010 02:31) Reply to somu
Polo is too expensive and has a inferior engine though the body work is best in class. 1200 cc engine but the mileage is only 16-17 kmpl under city riding conditions. You will have to buy the roof antennae from the dealer worth Rs 26000 as it is not avaiulable in the market and Volkswagen has proprietry rights so no one else will manufacture that either. Spare parts are costlier even than honda accord, the front bumper will cost 15000 INR without taxes. | Reply

The Ford, a very respectable name in the automobile segment worldwide, could never join the big league in India. The company launched one vehicle after the other, one scheme after the other, but had to ultimately be content with an unspectacular show. The main reason behind the lacklustre performance was Ford’s poor after sales support. You will find Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai service centres even at presumed low turnover locations, but Ford service centres are few and far between. Worse, while replacement parts for Maruti and Hyundai vehicles are readily available at reasonable price, the Ford experience is just the opposite.Just to cite an example, my Ford Figo, delivered on April 24 through Metro Ford, Palace Road, still runs incomplete with something as basic as mud flaps! These flaps were ordered with the car on April 4. The rear view mirror for the left side, ordered at Metro Ford, Palace Road, on May 9, is yet to be supplied. Funnily, the dealer took Rs.500 as advance for the supply of the mirror – something unthinkable at Maruti or Hyundai, where the material would have been supplied instantaneously against payment. One wonders, if Ford cannot supply even rubber items and accessories like mirrors in a fortnight, how will it supply crucial replacement parts? Will the hapless customer have to wait for years to put his car back on road? One expected Ford to have learnt from its mistakes, but the experience shows otherwise. When will Ford become serious about customer service? If it is serious about its ambitious expansion plan in India, how can Ford afford such shoddy after sales? | Reply

Yes Amitab this is another figo owner from darjeeling i am also facing the same problem with the moonson on in the hills m facin a problem with mud comin as far as the roof without the mud flap. i fail to understand ford such abig co fails to put a mudflap on the car that too on indian roads. They should really give it a thought for the after sales part to the cuctomer since Figo has sold like crazy. So Ford guys please pull up ur socks in order to beat the competetors.Milage my dear is pathetic with Figo | Reply

Hey Krish there is no comparison between Figo and Punto. Figo is engineered for developing countries like ours while Punto when released was Europe's No:1 seller. We don't see any comparison between Indica Vista and Skoda Fabia do we? Figo is build for the price. There has to be some reason to price it that way. Alto's sales in the region of 20K per month does not make it a better car then rest all in the same segment!! Don't go by sales figures to declare a car hit or flop. Look at Honda CRV's sales figures for past 3 month and compare it with Toyota Fortuner. What will you call guys who buy CRV? "CRV Idiots". Cool down. | Reply

Guys, you have to understand one thing, Mediocrity rules, particularly inIndia. We are a Social animal and always like to follow where other peopleare going and this rule is applicable everywhere. Most of the people buycars discussing with their friends and colleagues, they don't buy seeing anadvertisement. Issue Update : My Friend's Figo EXI (petrol) which is just 3 weeks old got its tyre replaced yesterday. The tyre was defective and that was the reason the car was pulling towards left. And the kind of shouting was required..well i dont think everybody will be able to do it. Quite a few Figos are having alignment issue and Ford is trying to proactively manage this. The news papers are yet to report this issue. Details in Facebook figo wall. For a new car to have this kind of issue not good. And the service quality is lousy. My friend thinks he has done a mistake in buying Ford. I dont want to get into any kind of argument but if a new Ford owner who used a Hyundai car before says this, the point needs to be taken a bit seriously. But the car in itself is good. | Reply

I have ikon 1.8 diesel, 2002 model, 1,15,000 kms driven, it gives a mileage of 15KMPL, but frankly i feel nowadays it takes lot of load when AC is on, so i m testing it for its latest mileage, drove 1.3 petrol for some time, tested Figo, n found it better than IKON 1.3. My take on after sale service is all cars use latest technologies, which we like and look for, and these technos make car heavy on pocket, so I donot expect any new maruti to be cheaper than ford or fiat in coming times(specially if u get it serviced from authorised service station). Outside mechanics wont be able to understand the new specifications specially deisel. Secondly, all cars come with atleast 3 years of warrenty so why worry(abt after sale service) if u donot want to keep ur car for longer. Though I feel lucky that my ford did not harm my pocket much. But there were some problems sometimes and even ford people were not able to resolve, and I talked to higher authorities and got my money back, and got problems resolved somehow. Specially AC, it was really very good for initial 2-3 years, but after that it was not good. My idea on after sale service is, earlier ford was really bad in this as most of the parts were US made, but new cars eg figo are developed (ford claims) for countries like india, so theysay we should expect improved after sale service n cost. For figo, the price difference in diesel n pertrol is almost 1 lac, so if u r not driving much prefer petrol. Earlier(and perhaps now also) for diesel and petrol, every electronic part, AC compressor, altenator ets were different, diesel one more costlier and not found in local markets. I got both AC and altenator repaired outside in delhi as ford was replacing only, 40k for AC compressor and 12K for altenator. Biggest problem is they do not repair, they go for replacement only, which is costly as parts are not available outside like maruti n tata. An in india there is one thing, mighty "JUGAD". | Reply

I took a test drive at the Kotivakkam Ford Dealer at Chennai. It was a diesel car, I must say, I was very impressed, with the speed, the way it made nice u-turns at signals and in handling potholes. The boot space is too good. I have been a maruti fan all these days, but this car is just too good, especially for the price. I feel, Rear window is not much of an issue with me, my only concern would be the service network and how costly would be the spare parts and maintenance aspects of Figo...If these doubts are cleared, then I will be going for it... | Reply

Ford should ensure rear power windows (as an option at least, as they are doing for alloy-wheels/front-fog-lamps). Believe me, I'm ready to buy petrol titanium, but just waiting till next month, if they ensure for "rear power windows". Had gone to Lathangi Ford, bangalore - and they are saying, technically it's very much possible (and will cost hardly INR. 3000 - 4000). FORD should seriously think on this. For starters, you should look how the driveability is tuned at low end rather than simple Power values ( as Power/Torque alone could be misleading). Good space, good engine(diesel). sales guy claimed that the diesel engine delivers a average of 24kmpl on highways. however, felt that the engine is less torquey than the swift diesel.interiors are a bit cheap comapred to swift. Buy Indigo CS only if you really, really need that small extra boot space. It's most outdated in this bunch - shouldn't actually be compared to Swift/Polo/Figo. Since you are considering Swift, I don't think boot space is a problem for you. If you want the Swift, should wait for new 2011 version. It's likely to be a bit larger and interior space is a big problem with Swift.Polo is the most modern design and most expensive of all these, but Figo's diesel engine is better to drive. Figo is probably the 'best of all worlds' if your running is high. Cheap to buy and Run, has all the safety equipment at 5.5L Titanium. Ford is tom-tomming low cost of service and parts for Figo. Take a test drive and make up your own mind. | Reply

Ford of course, is a good brand. Affordability is the main issue on which u need to make up ur mind before gonna own a Ford. Ford Cars are notrious for their ownership costs. They will slowly erode ur bank account. Go for Maurti if u do not wanna spend much on after sales costs. Think of it..Ask Ford owners and finally make a decision. After all, it's your hard earned money | Reply
DG (11 March 2010 11:15) Reply to Sadasivam
Personally owned Fiat and Maruti cars, and have friends with Ford Fiestas and ikons. Maruti cars have low maintenance, at the cost of rattle-free durability and passenger safety - they have often avoided adding safety musts like ABS and airbags even as options.. best sellers like Alto are prime examples. And some of the low maintenance cost comes from road-side repairs with spurious parts. Maruti parts and accessories remain the most copied ones, and you never see Maruti going after such piracy/duplicate part makers.Ford has come a very long way in the last few years. Fiestas are not expensive to maintain compared to similr cars if you check with owners. Figo is specifically designed for long component life and low cost. Most common service spares for Figo are cheaper than i10 and Swift. Costs have been cut via local production and reuse of existing platforms. So, for the first time we have a hatch that's 1) solid, 2) cheap to buy and 3) cheap to run 4) safety features included. Indian small car buyers normally get only 2 of these 4!I hope Ford delivers the right dealership and service experience. | Reply

Figo got - GFT IB5 gear box which is well proven and has been produced more than in million around the world. So, this car got a well proven engine and Gearbox. Apart from this many other components has been taken from Fiasta, icon and Fusion. So, Very good chance that it will be reliable vehicle. Howevere, I cannot comment on serving concerns. | Reply

Figo will be a success in India if it is priced on the same lines as Beat. Who will buy Figo? The middle aged family man who wants a bigger and safer car, and I may add that majority of Indians who have money to buy cars come in this category. The young are likely to go for Beat and other such smaller cars of Maruti and Hyundai. If Figo is not priced low, it will sink without a trace in India. Simple as that. | Reply

Thefirst look of FIGO gave me an impression of FUSION. Though I like Fusion very much, I was disappointed with the FIGO. When U know that ur one of products, i.e Fusion is a big failure in the Indian Market, why on earth would U design ur new launch on the old paltform? It seems, they have lot of unsold Fusion left with them and so they are trying to make full use of the old product by giving some cosmetic changes to it's outer look. but then again, Fiesta also is on the same platform. If U convert Fiesta into hatchback, it will exactly look like Fusion or Figo. Don't think, Ford will be able to survive as far as Figo is concerned. Little let down!!!!! | Reply

Fusion is not a failure-It is similar to Maruthi Baleno -the most underestimated and under rated good car-With all glitches removed by Ford Design team Fusion is worth the value and is not any more a CONfusion. Figo will come out to be one of the best if priced properly unlike Fiesta or Fusion | Reply

yes, FUSION could have been one of the bestsellers at say Rs.5 lac for base version. ditto for honda JAZZ. hence, FIGO has to be lower then BEAT/POLO otherwise it may not sell even 100 cars per month after 6 months. in fact, honda can stun the competition by pricing it around Rs.5 lacs, which will kill Dzire, all Skodas, and most other B /C segment cars at one go, is honda listening?

I've driven this car - it's a great little vehicle. | Reply

Ford has to be respectful towards India because it is a matter of their survival. But the sad thing is they have run out of ideas and dont have good products in their stable. | Reply

I think it's more that. What you say a be said of any company - indian or foreign. Ford has always been respectful of the Indian Market - think back to Escort, etc. They've been in India lonnng before companies like Hyundai and VW..

The car looks like the Ford Fusion, which bombed. Ford better get some new and better models. | Reply

You have not mentioned anything about the interior space, suspension setup, etc. I doubt if you actually saw the car, much less drove it. Seems you pasted photos from the press release for the sake of "BREAKING NEWS". | Reply

This is built on old platform and looks are a combo of lest generation and present generation European fiesta. So basically its a and old product with a bit of mascara and lip gloss thrown in. Ford has been selling two generations old fiesta as Ikon. It needs to get in latest products or it will it find the going very tough when guys at Hyundai, Suzuki and Honda are getting latest products in. | Reply

How'd anyone say this's an attractive car? GM's BEAT would beat this down! | Reply

the front looks bad, simply bad. The rear though looks good and solid. I feel ford has drawn clues from design of Hyundai cars in India, and tried a similar look on the front. But the truth is ALL hyundai cars look bad to majority of customer, they sell because Indians dont have better options.Ford should seriously work to change the front look of the car. VW Polo's front is very good. | Reply

I am a little surprised at the praises heaped onto the car. I cant speak for the performance, but surely you have to admit, the styling isn't quite as contemporary as you make it out to be to be. And, since when did this become their global front look? The US version Ford Fusion is an example of their current styling, as far as their front goes. Ford makes some really good looking cars. I need not mention the Mustang, which is well known. but the stuff like the Fusion, etc are good examples. I dont know why they are being so bland here. The front of teh Figo is more aligned with their Indian models like the Fiesta | Reply

ford has good cars , with good price and features. the problem is that cost of spares and maintainence is very expensive.it appears they make up the price of the car in the sale of spares . also the quality of chrome in the car especially the ford logo and name/ model insignia is cheap and fades out within a year. you can see a lot of ford ikons with blackened name and model plates. they are cheap plastic with plating that fades out fast. | Reply

Fiat has risen from the ashes. Punto and Linea are big hits. Go and Check out how they provide service now.Excellent! there was a fiat free service campaign which happened last weekend, where they had Fiat Engineers from ranjagoan plant talk to customers and get their feedback. Very interactive and I fully appreciated it. | Reply

dont think that the Ford has given the completely new car to india. This car is called as Fiesta in some countries and its been outdated there and thats when this car is launched in India. However they have launched a new variant of fiesta which is really cool and can compete with Mazda 2, Jazz in an international Market. | Reply
naveen (03 February 2010 09:54) Reply to Rahul Shah

Rahul is right, it is similat to 2007 Ford Fiesta Zetes-S, which was launched in UK. So, saying that figo is a new design is nothing but farce.@Naveen..dude dont get excited, i think u never been to UK or Australia so dont come to any conclusion. it seems u r car dealer or some one frm Ford. Hold on your horses before commenting, ur knowledge about cars is limited. | Reply
Rajani (03 February 2010 12:08) Reply to naveen
Rahul is correct - it is the OLD model Fiesta that is here in Melbourne Australia. I have one in my driveway (German built bought new in 2007)and except for colour it is the SAME. The NEW model here is amazing looking - but Ford had to send the old tooling somewhere so picked India...sorry guys. | Reply
