German car marker Volkswagen plans to launch its Polo model in the first-half of 2010 followed by a slew of others, a top company executive said.

"The Volkswagen Polo will be rolled-out early next year. The hatchback version of Polo will be launched in H1 2010 while the sedan version will be introduced in the second- half," Member of the Board and Director, Volkswagen Passenger Cars, Neeraj Garg was quoted as saying

Testing of the Polo is going on." The Volkswagen Polo would have both petrol and diesel versions, he said.

Volkswagen has a 500-acre manufacturing facility at Chakan near Pune with a annual capacity to produce 1,10,000 units.

The company, so far, has invested around Rs 3,800 crore in the plant, he said.

Volkswagen, which at present selling two models in India - Jetta and Passat-- plans to introduce the Beetle and soon, Garg said.

For Polo, the company is initially looking at a 50 per cent localisation. "To start with, we are planning to source 50 per cent of Polo's components from the domestic market. We are open for more localisation but it will depend on the quality and availability of the components, Garg said.

Volkswagen would be expanding its network in cities like Dagpur, Nashik and Vijayawada, Garg said.

Polo base model, with AC and Power Steering, solid colours (i.e.white), should be priced Rs.3.75 lakhs. It need not have power windows, remote petrol cap opening, keyless entry etc. Indians can do without such tantrums and want a good car at rock bottom price. The price can go up to Rs.6 lakhs with some more goodies and diesel engine. But if base model (AC | Reply

Ultimately these (Europian and Americancars) will rule Indian market. Maruti makes worst cars. I own Swift Diesel. engin is good but car is worst. I took test ride of Cruze, what a control in driving, marvellous! But that is out of budget. So there is no problem to own Polo. | Reply

NO way this car is giong to be less than 7-8 lakhs in India .Please do not expect his car of less price. They are great cars to drive and worst in maintainence .Spare part will e very expensive. | Reply

I totally agree with you!!!..I think u have got a very good point... Indians should be very careful while choosinga foreign car... India definitely needs low cost cars.... | Reply
Vny (25 November 2009 22:27) Reply to Saby
Thats true..., the VW image is for status and prestige., the car will be costly yet competitively priced to take on i 20, jazz and fabia....... | Reply
Atul (05 December 2009 19:14) Reply to Vny
guys u really think a company as big as VW will be foolish enough to sell a hatchback for 7-8 lakhs and too in todays market situation. IT will be priced around 4-4.5 lks and mark my word it along with other foreign manufactured cars will be a wake up call to Maruti to start looking at their deteriorating quality..they need to produce better looking and better quality feel cars...i mean who gives the same AC vents in all its cars and a hard plastic sun-visor in top-of the line Vitara!
  • Saby (23 November 2009 16:44)
Noooooooooooooooo!!! Please bring the Golf to India. Polo will be super flop in India due to its 2-1 door configuration..... similar to Herald... No one is going to touch it... I swear!!! | Reply
HARY (25 November 2009 13:46) Reply to Saby
Hey , i agree with you, even Nano 1.5 lakh (cheapest car of world) designed for indian market came with 4 doors. So, how can 2 door A class hatch back fit into the 4door car market like india. No way. | Reply
Vny (25 November 2009 22:18) Reply to HARY
The indian polo will have 4 doors only, not 2...... more over its ugly to put 2 door for a car which is 4mtr long..... being the sibling of fabia(SKODA)... it'll be high on the wallet and also vw network is not very well established, | Reply

Vny (25 November 2009 22:24) Reply to priyesh
both vw and skoda are similar..polo wiil be made at chakan plant near pune.,,, excise duties are less but VW polo can make a hole in your pocket if car not taken proper care....service costs are comparably high and spares are obscenely expensive.... for example if seat handle is broken.., handle is not available.., we need to buy the entire seat.. | Reply

With the Competitive price 4.5-5.5 lacs , Automatic version also , good model will surely be successful as India dont have such hatchbacks. With the India Traffic Condition , AT will rule the roost | Reply
  • jaspal thakur (30 October 2009 09:19)
its impossible for polo to be less than 5 lac may be a petrol variant can be up to 5 but all diesel will surely cross 5.5 -6.5. just like jazz. but pricing will have to be competetive as they have a annual capacity of 1 lac plus cars . they will not survive if they go for higher pricing.car would definately be very good.the only lapse will be higher service costs.double than swift | Reply

Indeed exciting to get the Polo; howeve, it would be good if a convertible option is added. In India all cars are closed over roof. Adding color with convertible option would give additional sales figures.Volks is the robost brand of Old Germany even from the war period. | Reply

Why not get the old Fox dies from Brazil and make those as-was (1.8-litre, lengthwise-4, manual-only, optional A/C) for Rs. 2.5 lakhs?Or, alternately, make Fox with 1.2-litre Polo engine for Rs. 2.5 lakh? | Reply

The sooner we make the changeover to electric cars - the better. They are much more energy efficient. And they are not petroleum dependant. As you know crude has been skyrocketing again. | Reply

It would be interesting to see what will be the design. VW Polo in Germany is a 2 1 door hatchback. I doubt if this version will be released or will be preferred in India. Nice car though. Would be great if its other sibling Golf also drives in. | Reply
