Toyota Corolla Altis diesel launched!

Team ZigWheels 21 Jul 2010

Test Drive Toyota Corolla Alt

Oil burner variant of Toyota's sedan launched at Rs 10.95 lakh to Rs 13.75 lakh - to go up against the Chevrolet Cruze and Skoda Laura.

Corolla Altis D4 D Specifications

Toyota Kirloskar Motors India has launched the diesel variant of its Corolla Altis sedan. The move had been on the cards for quite a while now, as ZigWheels had mentioned in its Cars of 2010 story in the beginning of this year. The new variant has been sensibly priced at Rs 10.95 lakh for the base variant to Rs 13.75 lakh for the top end version of the car. Armed with the diesel powerplant, the car will go head to head against the likes of the Chevrolet Cruze and the Skoda Laura in the Rs 12-15 lakh segment.

While most diesel cars in this segment sport 2.0-litre engines, the Altis may pop a surprise by donning a 1.4-litre D-4D engine under its hood. The engine is already seen on the international Corolla, as also the Toyota Yaris, and it won't be surprising to see the mill in the Indian Altis. Given the impending launch of the Toyota Etios sedan and hatchback in diesel versions later this year, the Corolla Altis may work as the harbinger of the small D-4D in India.

The variable geometry turbocharger equipped engine makes about 85bhp of power, but its real strength lies in its fuel efficiency - a factor that has often been neglected in this segment that people are now warming up to. The car returned a phenomenal 14 kmpl in the city and 24 kmpl on the highway during our tests. Check out the review right here on ZigWheels.com!

I have had a corolla petrol and laura diesel for quite a while now. I just want you to know that 85 hp and torque in 200s is not worth it. Swift has a better performance figures. Laura has a much better built quality and feels more elegant in all the aspects (designing and the quality of material used) the only problem is high service cost (It does not require any other maintainance) If i was to be given an option. I would go for Laura any given day. | Reply

IAny one going for a car would definitely look for the cost of servicing cost, running cost and good service engineering practice at service centre is the most important factor from financial perspective. If not, then one should go for Mercedes. Skoda stands nowhere as compared to honda and toyota. Ask any auto expert. | Reply

Had the test drive of Toyota Altis diesel today. Steering is excellent, Rear seat legroom is more than its rivals like CRUZE and LAURA. Driving seat comfort is also on parwith its rivals, had some engine noise as well...donno why?1.4lt engine is good but not as good as CRUZE and LAURA. More money for small engine, I sold my VERNA and was looking for a replacement...ahahah but i can say VERNA was more powerfull than ALTIS Diesel. it should be 10Lks Plus on road not more than that, Even we do not have any extra latest new technology or feauture like CRUZE. I am comfused, for CRUZE i'm worried about the brand and resale cost, for LAURA its heavy cost of maintainance for every service and each spare part. Was expecting a lot from Corolla Altis Diesel version.I even surprise why Toyota has not come up with 2lt diesel engine in india, was expecting if it launches its 2LT engine which is already released in some countries abroad.:)) | Reply

y do u require a power in city ( if u driving in a metropolitin city) the max speed u would run would be 40kmph...so u would require the power only when u go for long drives..where i believe after 1800rpm ..altis id very good..power should not he deciding factor for value of a car..in that case non of the maruti cars would have in the indian roads,..perfect city n highway cars which gives feel of reliabiity, and quality nowhere comaparable to korean make ( verna )... | Reply

1.4 liter 89bhp. Quite sad for a car of its weight, size and segment. Does Toyota sell this combination anywhere else other than India? | Reply

Same Altis Diesel is there in Europe since long.. The Toyota's idea is not only to give performance but also fuel efficiency with its Brand identity, quality and reliabilty. The car is not at all under power. U can feel it when u drive keeping all ur perceptions aside of 1.4 ltr engine. | Reply

If VW can do the same things in Vento with 8-9 lacs the Toyota should check their price as they are not as committed as the VWs are. Even VW needs to have a look at Swift desire price and needs to bring vento around 6.5 to 7 lacs where diesel is 7 lacs because Fiat linea starts from 7.15 lacs for diesel offering an arguably the best looks and with magical diesel engine. In short altis should cost around 7.5 to 8 lacs , Vento should cost around 6.5 to 7 lacs and linea diesel should be around 6.8 to 7.7 lacs. Guys I am indicating the true Indian price because as compared to International standards we don't get sattelite navigation system with built in DVD - mp3 systems and much more that they are available in developed countries at the most competitive prices. what we get in India is just light brown interiors with dash integrated mp3 system on top range models which doesn't make any car well equipped. there's much to talk about but in summary we , the indians are considered as less mentally developed so these companies can get away with almost anything e.g 1.2l petrol Honda Jazz for more than 8 lacs ( so ridiculous .........!). | Reply
