Fiat's Diesel Mass Appeal

Vikram Gour 03 Nov 2009

Buying a Car ? Get Best Deal

We've all heard about the famous 1.3 multi jet diesel from the Fiat stable. It's a brilliant little unit that has been put to extensive use by Fiat in their entire range. Celebrating this little engine?s fame is the 'Fiat Diesel Drives India' tour across the country, wherein journalists will drive a Linea, Grande Punto, Fiat 500 and a Palio, all powered by the same 1.3 unit over 10,000 odd kilometers across the country.

Team Zigwheels, namely Dilip Desai, Abhishek Nigam, Priyadarshan Bawikar and Vikram Gour, incidentally were the first set of journalists to take on the momentous drive. The first leg was flagged off from Fiat's Ranjangaon facility and would culminate in Bangalore. The convoy drove through Chiplun and Goa, wherein we got to face some brilliant roads, wonderful twisties and of course any journey across India would not be complete without a drive over some rather horrendous potholed roads!

The fleet of cars held up well and notions of being sluggish or underpowered were soon dispelled for the 1.3 litre diesel manages rather well under the hood of this entire range. From the small 500 to the large Linea sedan, the 1.3 unit was able to yank the cars up steep climbs and allow for three digit cruising speeds with utter ease. The only car that did face a little difficulty on the broken roads was the 500, but then again it isn't designed for such roads and the fact that we only got a few bubbles on the tyres goes to show that all the car needed was some higher profile rubber to make the trip with ease.

The total distance Team Zigwheels covered roughly amounted to 1400 kilometers. At numerous tank-ups we found that the cars had roughly consumed the same amount of fuel. From the 500 to the Linea there was roughly a 1 litre difference! The cars were all averaging between 16-18 kilometers to the litre depending on the stretches of road we tackled. Of course on stretches such as Hubli to Chitradurga, where the highway was in an utter state of shabbiness the average dropped, but we pulled into Bangalore having averaged a decent 16 kilometers to the litre on the entire trip. No doubt that goes to show the frugal nature of the engines, despite being pushed hard at times for us to make up time as we had many unscheduled stops-mainly to soak in the beautiful countryside in all its vibrancy.

The 'Fiat Diesel Drives India' experience was a real eye opener on the brilliance of the 1.3 multi jet unit. It's a versatile engine that has great low end torque and despite behaving slightly differently in each model that it powers, it still maintains its inherent quality of being a frugal unit that is a joy to drive. Such is its abilities that apart from Fiat, Tata and Maruti Suzuki also employ this engine in their diesel models! So, it might have been a little known fact, but when you add up the numbers the Fiat diesel does drive India!

All this brickbats on which carmaker is the best actually looks idiotic if you go down to some basics. The engine performs better on the Swift and Ritz bcos these vehicles are lighter than the Punto. The problem is with the excise duties in India. The Punto comes in multiple engine options such as 1.3, 1.6 | Reply

We Indians generally buy car on mostly 2 strong aspects one is Price and other is mileage though some do consider the looks, after sales and other things. But mileage still remains the utter most criteria.Maruti does offer the complete package of Price, Mileage, Engine (Fiat’s), After sale service etc etc etc. But all it takes is one hit and damage cost is so much that mileage becomes negligible, also small small dents puts dents in the pockets.I am driving Maruti Zen estilo from past 2 years, still no able to digest the bad build quality though engine is top notch. Maintenance is also pretty low.Maruti provides better package deal as it sales far higher number of units then anyone else. That’s just because we people compromise on quality for mileage. Not that I am against Maruti or in favor of Fiat but I believe that build quality should have some standard norms for all that runs of four wheels, like we have Bharat Standard norms for fuel emission. How many of you thinks that a Maruti small cars (other than swift will survive the crash testing mainly side carshes.Anyway decision is yours so the money.Choose well.Cheers | Reply

Hi Readers and Zigwheels journalists, proud Maruti and Fiat product owners, I own a FIat Linea Emotion Pack since its launch. I had done an extensive research on Fiat for 4 months , tracked Linea launch very closely , knew that FIAT can't beat Maruti or even Honda in sales for next many years, still went for it. I do not want to fall prey to the discussion of which company is better , Maruti or FIAT, I am sure both are in their own way. Let me share the logic with an example. These days we want our children to study in the best school with best of facilities and standards, /ac buses, a/c library, LCDs in class rooms, gyms, swimming , etc. But we dont understand that all a child needs to be an IAS one day is one chair/table and a teacher. Similarly it does not matter who is the better, which company is better, all it matters are we satisfied with whatever we have bought. It should be informed decision based on ur own buying criteria. Even if the answer to the criteria that choose lead to a car made by not so sales strong company, we should go for it. Someone told me Linea would not have resale market value compared to Maruti SX4 or Honda City, i told them we should not buy car just because we want to sell them one day. Sorry for being long, i said this since i found many people advocating too much for the companies they felt is the best. Best Wishes Rajnish | Reply

I agree with Simpush's comment. The logic given to support buying decidion of linea is very weak.I would have thought twice before rejecting a Honda product in the same price range. If i were in your place, I would be concerned about the aftersales services, Quality of trained FIAT manpoer at TATA dealerships,Resale value, parts availability of LINEA | Reply
tara (11 November 2009 20:26) Reply to nikhil
what trained manpower ? The mechanics at the two service stations of Maruti at Bhubaneswar find it extremely difficult to locate problems in a Maruti 800. Forget about other models. If this is the situation of Maruti with respect to Maruiti 800 in a state capital then imagine Merc and others. We should only go for a good product forget about after sales service and resale value. The days of diposable cars are here. No human being likes to be in the maintenance business. Even when you give vehicle for simple washing they simply wash it without bothering to remove dirt.
rocky (15 November 2009 02:39) Reply to nikhil
Tara:I do not know how old is ur maruti 800, but, definitely its not new. So u get rid of this junk of urs as the days of disposable cars r here. why to unneccesary go to service stations and waste time :)

I own a Palio Stile and never ever have I regretted buying the same. A lottle incident would perhaps put things in perspective - I was hit by a Maruti Wagonr from behind. My bumper got ruptured and my tail light broke. But to my utter horror the entire front right of the WagonR was compressed by at least a foot. Such is the difference with a Fiat car and the Maruti's. I cannot comment on the other European car makers but know for sure that BMW, Merc's, Ferrari's have created a niche for themselves which no Japanese manufacturer can match... | Reply

My Palio Multijet lags when compared to Vista and Swift. I am really surprised that the same engine performs better in Maruti and Tata and lags in Fiat vehicles.. Handling, Mileage, Maintainance interiors are top notch both in Maruti and Vista. | Reply
Viswesh (16 November 2009 14:42) Reply to Srikanth
Srikanth, Vista and Swift are tuned differently. The pick up in second and third is good in these cars for Palio it comes on it s own in third, fourth and fifth gears. Take it for a spin on the highway and you would see the brilliance of Palio against the Swift or Vista. The steering is very nice and Palio is planted with steering feebback even at 140km/hr, whereas in a Swift the steering gets light at 110 km/hr or so...

I do not agree on selling junk, I feel proud of driving Fiat Palio 1.2 Petrol with least maintenance and good grip on the road. Spares are as well easily availbale without any trouble with very lesser cost compared to other brands in the segment. | Reply

I am deligted to have opted for fiat Palio Stile.. its an owsome car as compared to other.. other cars in segment are no where near in terms of build quality and good engine. After sales and availability of spare too has improved with Tata coming in to picture.. | Reply

Hey, oil burners have a larger carbon footprint than petrol powered vehicles. Simply bcos diesel has more carbon than petrol. Diesel's carbon footprint is less but it emits less of other noxious gases. | Reply

Fiat should be thankful to Maruti for making their Diesel engine famous and successful in India. The same engine was there in Palio, but, the car just didnt took off. | Reply

dear Mr Rockytg,For your info, the old palio doesnt have a multijet engine. It was launched only with the fiat palio stile. The swift was launched before the fiat and for your info, maruti buys the engine from GM who has a contract with fiat. | Reply

nice to know that u decide upon ur car by the thud it makes on closing hte door. here, i am not talking abt which car is better but highlighting that maruti made the engine popular. Also, as per u Fiat is far better than maruti but when it comes to sales it is no where near it. U r just re iterating what i m saying ;) | Reply

I agree. Maruti cars are better value for money and better packaged. So they sell better. It is a shame that Fiat providing such great engine isnt able to sell its own cars. It implies they are only great auto component/engine manufacturers. Fiat should do some introspection as to why they dont sell enough cars in India despite making good engines that make other cars so popular.
Jeetu (03 November 2009 20:56) Reply to Rockytg
I think here Maruti should be thankful to fiat for providing such a frugal engine for not such high quality Maruti cars, Isn;t it? | Reply

It may be worth noting that from sales figures, people prefer the Ritz petrol to the Ritz diesel. Maruti's KB12 petrol engine is much better than the Fiat Multijet for small cars. | Reply
 Opendro (04 November 2009 10:46) Reply to S Manohar
The price difference between diesel Ritz and Petrol Ritz is too high. That is the main reason.
 rockytg (04 November 2009 21:54) Reply to S Manohar
Opendro;the difference between petrol and diesel engines is always high. Even in case of fiat there is big difference. But, u very well know that how many petrol vehicles Fiat is selling.
