Ferrari to showcase 599 GTB Hybrid

01 Feb 2010

It's now Ferrari's turn to go green. The luxury automaker has announced to showcase the hybrid version of its most famous 599 GTB in the Geneva Motor show to be held in March this year. The 599 GTB will be the world's first ready-for-market exotic hybrid.

Though the company has not divulged much detail but European patents revealed last year suggest that Ferrari was working on a four-wheel drive hybrid drivetrain with electric motors powering the front wheels.

There are also reports that Ferrari is likely to use lithium ion battery pack with a pair of electric motors fixed at the rear axle, along with Ferrari's outlandishly powerful 600-plus horsepower V12 engine. Other fuel-saving features will include start stop capabilities and Formula One-based regenerative braking technology known as KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System). Fuel economy is expected to increase by about 30 percent over the non-hybrid 599 GTB.
