Cars our cricketers drive

Shrabani das 08 Oct 2009

Sachin

Sachin and his Modena

First and foremost let's talk about the living legend Sachin Tendulkar. We all are aware about the fiasco that happened when Sachin was awarded the Ferrari 360 Modena when the batting maestro had requested a custom duty waiver on the car. The Modena was gifted to him by FIAT, after the Mumbai batsman equalled the late Don Bradman's tally of 29 Test centuries. It is said that though Sachin Tendulkar usually likes his car to be chauffeur driven, sometimes he also takes wife and kids out for a spin in his Ferrari. The only condition... is that he had to find time to do so from his busy schedule. Besides the Ferrari, he owns two ultimate status-symbols, a silver-coloured Mercedes-Benz and a black Opel Astra, which he won in a Sharjah tournament.

Next : Dhoni surely an automobile fanatic

None of them have produced one grain of rice or one brick for home or one yarn for our clothes or one programs that makes technology improve our life. But they have all wasted billion of productive man hours and millions of column cms of newsmedia . unless we people start respecting productivity and shun wasteful parasites (the place they belong to as per ancient traidition is KOOTHADI shawls), how will we improve as human beings? | Reply

@Narayana...You mean to say Sports are not important for our society!!?? We are not honey beas who live to collect nector from flowers. We are humans, we hav emotions many other species lack or cannot express or simply cannot help, we have the power to express, hear and see whatever we want, simply, we need entertainment and thrill and many of us get these from sports. As far as technology is concerned, sports have pushed scientists to produce better and better cameras and broadcasting techniques. Sport industry provides employment to millions of people, whether directly or indirectly; and you say the people who are the drivers of this industry are of no use!!! | Reply

..and the fact that they are sportsmen, symbols of our nation has no meaning?? Seriously.. where do you come up with this!! | Reply

I can't believe they have these cars in India. How do they afford them? I have been to India and I just can't imagine how they could drive a hummer or a ferrari on the Indian roads. | Reply

India is Rich enough to have anthing..... Forget about Cars many people in India own a Private jet.... India is Rich by all means. A car should be credited a SUV or Supercar only if it can dominate the Indian roads otherwise its not a car or SUV.... | Reply
George (23 December 2009 13:45) Reply to Sean Thomson
Sean, did you go to Pakistan or Afghanistan? Or were you on a low budget ($5 a day) trip to cheap destinations? India was the richest country in the world before the British came and the poorest when they left. Things are getting back to normal now! | Reply

If hummer cannot be driven on Indian roads, it would be shame on its manufacturer's capabilities. What a Maruti 800 like car can endure on Indian roads, surely hummer should do a better job. India for all good reasons has changed a lot in past 10 years. I've travelled abroad many times and I feel that our golden quadrilateral highways are as good as any developed country highway. So stop India bashing. We know ur worth | Reply

You cannot drive these cars like Ferrari and BMW M3 in India. You just sit and them and enjoy the smell of the leather. If you try to drive them you will either hit somebody or damage the car by going over a speed-breaker or pothole!!!! The best thing is to become a car collector like Vijay Mallya or the Maharaja of Indore. | Reply

Subrata (23 December 2009 10:03) Reply to Saumyajit
Saumajit, Sean is not totally incorrect. Still today lots of roads are full of potholes and speedbrakers. But it is also tru that there are lot of good streaches to drive these cars. | Reply

I am sorry to see the old model cars with great Indian players. Some one here said to respect what they earn. yah !!sure. if they earn it. And you know how they get it. Look atthe cost of there contract. It is lower than avg salary of new generation executives in India. So does that mean every executive Indian drives BMW, Ferrari.... | Reply
  • som (26 November 2009 00:11)
get a life you loosers. instead of cursing these cricketers for driving cars that you can only dream of, try n be like them. they've earned it. not begged it from you. n they're not bound to give stuff to charity. learn to respect ppl who achieve | Reply

Who cares who drives what? It's their personnel matter. As far as cricketers concerns, they should pay attention to their games instead of fame. If they play good, fame will follow. Also about the public should not pay much attention to these kind of crap about anyone. | Reply
  • wolverine (11 November 2009 11:58)
winning is what we should be seeing instead of what these players drive. the players are too immersed in personal luxuries rather than national glory. pay the players for their performance. the BCCI is spoiling cricket. | Reply

If you remember, sachin was begging govt to deduct tax for his imported ferrari(gifted by schumacher)... Its a waste of time to discuss all these things. first off all TOI doesn't have sense to keep all these bakvaas topics. | Reply
  • sathian (30 October 2009 10:36)
what s waste topic to debate. these cricket players are living their life lavishly in our poor country. What they have achieved for our country. And do they make any charity work for the sake of millions of poor indians. While most of the other sportspersons are struggling in their life only cricket players are leading a luxurious life. | Reply
  • satya (30 October 2009 00:25)
Evry body shud use vehicle that consumes less fuel. A hummer goes 2 kmpl !!!!!!. These role models shud rather be setting an example | Reply

none of them play cricket anymore but are rewarded for one off stint..like 6 sixes...India havent won world cup since 1983...we have individual stars but no team...i think Sachins worst regret would be not winning the world cup for India.. | Reply

Rav4 is not recommended , I know it has not had the best reputation in Australia. Toyoto is fixing problems FOC even after warranty period. They should be recalling the vehicle. | Reply

A person who has come from middle class family understands the value of single paise. I wouldn't call him stingy he is more like economical. There is thin line between stingy and being economical. | Reply
