Cars Indian CEOs drive

Maybach-62-s

Interestingly, Indian business heads prefer the timeless, elegant German wonder, Mercedes, over other gas-guzzling road monsters or flashy four-wheeled beauties. The list of admirers, who prefer the different variants of a Merc include Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani, who drives a Maybach 62. In his parking lot, you can also find an off-white Mercedes S class and a black Mercedes SL500.

    Just little surprised that most of the cars driven by this CEO's are common cars. I am not a CEO but do own 2 of the car models mentioned here. I was expecting them to be driving/riding custom build cars. In terms of status Merc S class costs around $100K US $50K accessories which is less one years salary of a graduate with resonable job. So nothing fancy about it. I was seriously hoping none of them would be driving less then rolce roy. And nothing to do with class but more of selection | Reply

    As India is rising it is iminent that we have more global leaders and managers who will be operating business world wide sitting in India. Hence if they have the capability to afford these extravaganga, so it be, and our endeavours should be how we can reach their level. It is possible, we just have to be more daring in taking decisions. If this capability is inherited even majority of us will be owning not one Merc S-Class but two. | Reply

Good Suresh, in a way that we could own those (not me). But were will we drive if most of us own those such, or for that matter, even 100million of Indians own, I dont think there will be enough O2 to burn the fuel (even if you consider oil companies suppy you oxygen). Before that, there is uncertainity of oil. Development is not of owning Mercedes. Its to be measured with peoples Health care (of mitigating dangerous diseases), reducing life-style diseases, having good air to breath at zero cost, good water to drink, and good eco-system surrounding us. What we see in this list of achievers is definitely modesty in terms of owning vehicles to their size of income. But, they are irresponsible in some ways or other towards environment. Example is DLF which tries to develop its land by building sky-raise buildings, exacavating soil and putting it all in the city roads, harming people with bronchial problems. For no reason, a not so well-off person is forced to be out of road, or use a car (with AC and windows closed). Thats only one thing. There are several other people betting big on India's Power demand by supplying them with a dated technology of energy conversion. If America pollutes, we cannot have a race with them to be bigger polluters. We can still be setting examples by practicing cleaner energy conversion systems. | Reply

    Someone at TOI has to justify the salary cheque so has attempted it, good or bad is left to the readers.While it comes to making statements its quite unfair to target gujjus or punjus for what they are, if you have it flaunt it and so they do.enjoy the cars and i agree with someone here, they work hard to earn it all so a sincere suggestion to all is - work hard / smart to own one quickly.Cheers to all of you.A proud punjabi | Reply

Dear Mr Sen,My Experience in Kolkatta.In Trams there were two classes. One was VIP and other was Common. The Fare of VIP was 5 paisa more than Commons. But to my surprise common was densely populated in peak hours , and VIP was empty. That to for 5 paisa. Mr Sen .. sorry but your communist thinking is pricking you. Remember we are talking about CARS.. not cycle rickshaws.and if you dare ,, just reply this ,, How many Industrialist have been produced by Bengal ?None...so keep your ideas with you .. and stop this racial abuses,,,,feel proud for what India have given to you ....and Bengalis are found of being saliried community .. they dont understand the charm of being businessmen.Jai Ho India,,, | Reply

    There appears to be this mistaken belief in the minds of the present newspaper that only people who hanker after a lifestyle based on conspicuous consumption read this paper.(Of course,we would love to have more choice but the mainstrem media is truly getting streamlined in a way that is not necessarily suggestive of "choice" of viewpoints).One is severely disconcerted to note the severe dumbing-down of content and printing of artcles of no interest to the middle classes.This paper is full of advertisements and there is so little of interest to a "commoner"-if I may stoop to using that term for a country which the Preamble to the Constitution pronounces "socialist".This paper is running a poll/comment page on "should old cars be taken off the road"-withiut realising that there is a vast section of honest pensioners retired from defence services and govt etc as well as honest serving govt officers who cannot afford to keep buying new cars.In the current age of "reycling",there should be talk of perhaps upgrading emission equipment within cars than to writing them off.Can our scrapyards handle this much garbage?It is shameful in a country where the gap between the poor and rich continues to widen and there is no public transport,pedestrian safety worth the name,that newspapers have the gall to print such rubbish! | Reply

    The CEOs mentioned are not very popular as style icons or movers and shakers in India. It would have made sense if top IT industry and Bio Tech industry CEOs were listed as they are setting latest trend in purchasing power of CEOs and young India loves to follow them. Mercedes doesn't make much of a style statement for position of CEO. Ferrari and Lamborghini should have been highlighted to show latest trend in Indian top executives buying capacity. | Reply

There used to be one. Tho' not exactly a CEO, Philips India Head Bob Hoekstra used to ride in a Reva to make a point. Not quite an Indian CEO but still an India-based Senior executive. He is no longer in India though. | Reply

Arun, please do not say that. Reva is a lead-acid battery based car. The chemical-to-electrical-to-mechanical efficiency of energy is so low. I have blogged on so-called achievement of the Reva. So much wrong in that statement. Reva, I read is used in PMO's office as well. Pity those fellows who think its eco-friendly. Its more polluter than the Carb based pre-2000 petrol cars. | Reply

    How insane all these camel and donky riders 20 years ago discussing brands and make of the cars. Car are suppose to take you from A to B point, what type a mode of transortation one chooses is his personal preference. It could be a donky or a car. If you are rich you can choose a car if poor choose camel or donky. | Reply

    the ceo's you have considered for your article are all kathe gayodo types or kamleshbhai vimleshbhai share bazar types or the typical north india lala todumal types.They have only money but no style,no class,no ophistication.They speak english with their mother tongue accent.They spit on the roads chewing paan tobacco.They are not fit to sit in any of these imported cars.They are suited for ambassador car or maruti van.Comeon,name of class and sophistication is vijay mallya,late feroz khan,gautam singhania,and by the way the most expensive car as of now is bugatti veyron and lamborghini reventon.I AM TWO HUNDRED PERCENT SURE THAT YOUR KATHE GAYODO TYPE CEO'S MENTIONED IN THIS ARTICLE HAVE NEVER HEARD OF THESE CARS. | Reply

In USA and europe the owner Drive the car, India is an exception.. Trust me the pleasure of the car is not in the back seat, but at the driver seat..thats where you feel the car. In so called the exotic cars the rear seat ride is as good as an high-end bus ride with electronic gags and two privite windows.. | Reply
