Buying a car ? Get Best Deal

BMW has finally lifted the covers off its latest 5 Series. With sharper looks, cutting edge features and a host of new engines this super saloon looks all set to demolish the competition

It's finally here. After multiple teasers and a host of renderings, BMW has officially unveiled the 2010 5 Series. The new sixth generation BMW 5 Series has been styled to reflect its almost perfect 50:50 weight distribution with beautifully balanced proportions, short overhangs, a coupe-like flowing roofline and a long, contoured bonnet. The familiar BMW kidney grille stands upright alluding to the car's sporting pedigree. Compared to the competition, the new 5 Series has the longest wheelbase in its class at 2968 mm and offers an extra 13mm of knee room for rear passengers, compared to the previous 5 Series. With a 520 litre boot and 40:20:40 split folding rear seats, the 5 Series aims to be as practical as it is elegant.

The interiors seem to be based on its bigger sibling, the 7 Series. The asymmetrically designed centre console ensures that all controls are comfortably within the reach while the multifunctional steering wheel has been simplified, putting all of the function keys in one hand and infotainment in the other. If you thought the interiors look good, just wait till you hear about the engines being offered. Diesels start with the 520d. With 185 PS and 380 Nm of torque on tap, the 520d accelerates to a 100 km/h in just 8.1 seconds. With pretty good fuel economy as well, the 520d is sure to do well in India as well. Two straight-six turbocharged engines will complete the diesel line-up; the 530d and the 525d. Joining the diesel-powered cars from launch are three straight-six petrol engines the 523i, 528i and the 535i. The naturally aspirated 523i and 528i both have an upgraded High Precision Direct Injection system resulting in the fast revving driving characteristic combined with low fuel consumption and emissions.

The real corker of the lot however is the top of the line petrol, the 550i which is powered by an acclaimed 407hp 4,395cc V8 engine.

Equipped with twin turbo chargers the 550i blitzes to 100 km/h in a supercar matching 5 seconds. The BMW 5 Series Saloon is offered with a wealth of optional equipment to enhance driver safety, comfort and enjoyment. Head-up Display, Night Vision with pedestrian recognition, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Change Warning, Speed Limit Info and then some. The new car will go on sale by March 2010. Expect an Indian entry soon after.

Poor output. The New 5 series looks like a 3 on steroids or maybe a baby 7. Where is this car's own identity? Mercedes is back as the number one selling luxury car maker and BMW does not even have a graceful answer to that. | Reply

the 5-series is the best car produced by BMW, it is more refined and its adds some space between its bmw wheels through extending the wheelbase and widening the track and because of its high performance driving capabilities it adds more value to the overall body structure of the car. | Reply

What a let down. The BMW could do so much more. Feature by Feature the E Class especially and even the Audi beat the 5 series. | Reply

The car looks like the perfect blend of the 3 and 7 series, but on some level it's lost the soul of the previous 5-series the most notable feature of which were the head and tail light which almost made it seem like the car was smiling at you without losing any of it's aggresive appeal . A beautiful job none the less. | Reply

I have three old BMWs, and I loveto drive them in the highwayswhich gives good handling andsmooth driving, above all, in anaccident, it can save the life. For the national highways of India,it is a good vehicle, but for theordinary use through the narrowlanes of city roads ( 5 carsrunning in three lanes) this kindof vehicle is a waste of money.People with too much money canbuy them for their prestige anddisplay of wealth. | Reply

If I live in India, even if I am toorich, I rather buy a Honda orToyota than buying German cars.German cars excellent for highspeed driving, not for city driving. | Reply

looks r not at all impressive compared to the eagle eyed prev gen 5 series . I want to say that BMW should not copy 7 series into there other series of cars . there should be some differentiation | Reply

Now this looks so much better than the the outgoing model. Happy to see Chris Bangle and his influence depart BMW. It's gonna be a difficult decision for me to make next year....BMW 5 series or Jag XF...... | Reply

Where are the roads in India to have driving pleasures from these luxury cars.Still 50K.M.Per Hour is considered as good average speed in India.Nashik is just 165 K.M. from Mumbai and we need minimum 4 hours to cover this distance. The roads too are not of International standards and do not carry any scientific study to have safe driving. | Reply

Mandy - which foreign country allows you to cover 165 km (102 miles) in less than 1 hr? 70 mph is the limit in most of USA

Well I have driven in Gujrat.. good roads no doubt..But I guess Rajasthan is supposed to have the best roads across India.. Have not driven there but have read about them in all the auto magazines.. that they have unadultrated turmac only there.. Would love to drive there sometime across the desert.. preferably in a 5 series.. :-)

looking at the numbers BMW would sell and the price tag they come with, I think road are least of the worries. The segment is too narrow and the late entry of BMW has ruled its chances out further | Reply
