This may well be the hottest volume-churning segment in the country right now, and for good reason.

Earlier dominated by the Maruti 800, the entry level hatch segment has a new king in terms of the Nano. Check out the competition on how they stacked up against the might of the tiny Nano!

For those who don't take too much pride in being with the absolute entry level cars, the mid-level hatchbacks offer a good option.

The Hyundai i10 and the Fiat Palio no doubt give the A-Star a run for its money, but the cute Maruti just managed to pipe the competition...

This has easily been the most exciting segment in India since the last couple of years, ever since the Suzuki Swift came and changed the rules of the Indian car game.

The Ritz may have shaken its own cousin's safe spot at the top of the large hatch heap, but the Swift still remains one of the most competitive cars in the country especially in its diesel form.

Premium hatches are somewhat new to our country, and slowly but surely buyers are ditching their big-car complexes for these spacious, modern and practical cars.

This is a new segment in India that has faced a lot of flak, however premium hatches are here to stay and though the Jazz might rule the roost, the others aren't far behind.

The value for money segment in sedans, and its a brutal battle to be the best here. The D'zire has made it to the top, against the Indigo, Ikon, Accent and Logan.

1998 was when Honda made inroads into India with the City. Ever since, it's been the top seller in its segment. The most important factor for its success was the engine.

This segment has gained a lot of momentum over the years and young money seems to find these cars rather attractive. The Honda City tops in terms of aspirational value, however cars such as the Fiesta, Verna, Aveo and SX4 have managed to give it a run for its money.

The Mitsubishi Lancer diesel had a strong fan following in the southern states, however it failed to make a national mark. The Linea is plagued by a lacklustre company reputation so it is no wonder these cars lost out to the 'Josh' machine.

The Swift Dzire is a disgrace to say the least. It may be practical and economical, but true car lovers will never buy a car like that. Shame on Maruti Suzuki for demeaning the AUTOMOBILE world. The Esteem was much more appealing.I own a 2005 model Zen and I really love it. I don't know why Maruti Suzuki had to replace it with the Estilo. I don't know about you guys, but my next car will be the Honda Jazz. It's the hottest hatchback in town. | Reply

Due to lack marketing muscles of Mahindra or deliberately weak marketing, Logan has been allowed to languish.Just look at used car coloums, how many Logans especially diesels are on sale.I have DLS, done 40K and not a misplaced sound. Drives like beauty. In Delhi bumper to bumper traffic with AC on it gives 20KPL and on national highway without AC at steady 75 KPH it delivered 30KPL.Look at space. Dezire, or any competitor can't even come near it.Mahindra has let this beauty fail. | Reply

This article is totally misleading. Cars are an individual things. Diff. cars cater to diff. people. No two people think alike similarly, their choices may vary. It is idiotic to generalise. Some people who prefer performance over economy will search for a differrent car than those whose primary concern is mileage. Some might give importance to safety while some may give to budget. In India, best cars fail sometimes. A kind of heard mentality... And the person who is writing the article is clearly obsessed by Maruti or is impressed by its sales across India. | Reply

A Honda City with automatic gear (transmission) would be the best. I have the same. After driving several models, I found this car the best, specially for long and comfortable drives and also for city drives. No hassle. I wonder why most Indians prefer driving manual gear cars even in cities. If only they knew how good auto transmission was they wouldn't bother manual. | Reply

Honda's would be OUT of the list..... sometime these analysis isn't right as all facts are not considered. | Reply

This seems more like a biased analysis. The author surely hasn't considered the engine life, and more importantly safety of the vehicle. On safety aspects, no Maruti vehicle will appear here I guess. I feel like my Alto is made of card board | Reply

I feel we Indians only appreciate show off kind of philosophy rather choosing something based on performance. Consider this, A diesel car which gives higher milage per liter then petrol burns fuel more efficiently! Then Diesel engine structurewise is more heavier and robust in make then petrol engines making it maintenance free for even 3 Lac Kms! Only problem which is seen in diesel engines are associated with noise and vibrations but with newer technologies (CRDI) , these problems are things of past. So go bang with Diesel cars, which are more preffered in Europe rather going for petrol ones. I own Renault Logan which gives more then 28 Kmph per liter average believe it or not and is absolutely maintenence free! | Reply

This is an outright biased analysis i have come across. Looks like the author reviewed only TWO cars in each segment and passed on his judgment. Advice to readers like us it to use our own judgment and not get swayed by these kind of articles. | Reply

Stop ranting and raving over the glory of Hyundai. Everyone knows that Hyundai is just a copy cat in the car industry. You just can't beat a car equipped with a K-series engine as in the case of A-star,Ritz and Estilo. Don't compare Korean brands with Japanese automobile giants like Suzuki and Honda. Come on, take a chill pill. | Reply

Well this is not the only magazine / website panning the Fiats and Hyundais for the engines, their performance, fuel efficiency and driveability (How can you justify a turning radius of 5.4 meters for Grande Punto, which is a small car). I guess readers should stop reading the articles if they feel all the magazines are biased. | Reply

This is one of the best articles I have read, no matter how much Fiat or Hyundai fans are cribbing abt it. The main plus of this feature is, the bests were chosen based purely on their technical superiority and basic automobile engineering standards that are clearly missing from Fiat and Hyundai offerings. Hondas and Suzukis are keeping it simple and offering only one or two engine choices that are best available in country while Fiats and Hyundai engines are clearly lagging when it comes to power delivery and fuel efficiency. And those who comment that Suzukis and Hondas are revered coz they are non Indian companies, should remember that Hyundai and Fiat are not Indian either. | Reply

Not very sure who has done the analysis and based on which criteria.Anyone can say that Hyundai I10 is better than A-Star. With better build quality and very responsive 1.2 litre engine.Mid-size Diesel has Ikon in the list. God forbid the car should be discontinued from production. It looks dated and engine performance should not be the only criteria. In Premium Hatch category when we consider Honda Jazz, it is an under-powered, highly over priced and to a certain extent ugly looking car.I would request the jury to do an end-to-end analysis before giving such a report. This is misguiding the audience. | Reply

Victor, as nice as the Linea is it is underpowered. to get any decent performance you need to keep it on the boil and it requires a larger powerplant to get the best out of this great looking car. The 1.9 TDI would be ideal. | Reply

How come the resale and the milage becomes much more important than that buit quality? Who are you gonna sell the car after a crash? thats if u survive!!!!!! rediculous article. I think the journalist must educate people about need for quality products specially in terms of safety and not mislead people. | Reply

CONGRATS ZIGWHEELS at PROMOTING THE JAPANESE CAR MAKERS in patricular. Only the after sales don't count. I think that your jury has no knowledge about DESIGN of Cars. The rating feels paticularly biased as the classy cars of all the PUNTO was missing, and declaring JAZZ as the winner shows your loyalty towards HONDA. Better just move further than the Re sale value or after sales and start giving importance to safety/performance. | Reply

Anybody who is a motor enthusiast or has driven some of these vehicles listed above will take Zigwheels views seriously. Impartial and objective assessment is not the yardstick which has been applied to declare the best models in each category. Those who are planning to buy a car need to test drive the cars themselves as well as take opinions of friends | Reply

Firstly, this is a very helpful article, though I wish there was some mention as to how the judgment was done. That would shed some more light on why the winners are whom they are, especially if they have won according to some distinct criteria. Nevertheless, I have taken your advice and am going to buy a Honda City. | Reply

The so called" best cars" in this articles are definitely the result of a deep bias on the part of the author. I, myself, being an engineer and author of automobile books being read by thousands of students studying automobile in India and even abroad, ca definitely say that this is a junk. There are other cars also which are of similar or even better quality. This article is going to mislead the common readers | Reply

I don't subscribe to the views expressed regarding Honda cars.According to me the greatest flaw in Honda cars is their low ground clearance and no protective iron sheets below the engine chamber unlike the European cars.On account of this, the chambers of Honda cars break while negotiating potholes and speed breakers. This makes Honda essentially a metro car and can never be a good highway or small town car! | Reply

The greatest half-truth/myth and misinformation spoken here is about Honda cars, including Honda city. These cars are only good for metro cities;NDMC areas. You drive any HONDA car at a speed more than 60 km/hr and if you happen to take it over any pot-hole more than six inches deep and a feet wide at that speed, then the chamber of the engine of your Honda City,Jazz,Civic shall be broken and engine oil will spill out.I believe we all wish to drive cars in real world and not the ideal one! | Reply
